Which head unit is in my truck?
I think you have the Premium (HA!) system in your truck. The HU is not too bad, but the speakers suck.
If you jsut replace the speakers, it will not be nearly as loud as the stock speakers. The aftermarket speaks need more power to push the thicker cones and and larger motors. I'd just ditch the original HU, keep it in case the new one craps out or you sell the truck. I repalced all mine and am very glad I did. I got a Clarion HU (300), 4 Clarion 5x7's (200 total), a Clarion sub-amp (180) plus two Polk 10" EX subs (150 total)in the boxes Lariat4WD makes. For under a grand, it will shake the whole truck if I want it to and sounds very good from lo volumes all the way up. I don't listen to rap and it wasn't meant to boom, but the subs hit nice and low, all the bass notes can easily be felt even at low volumes.
I just depends on what you want. I'm gonna drive this truck every day for at least an hour, so I wanted a good system. I didn't go as far as some, stripping the interior and dynamatting everything, but it just depends on what YOU call a good system.

Hey guys,
I just bought a 2001 F-150 XLT 4x4 Sport and I have the (I guess) "stock" head unit... it's the one with a cd player, but no casette. I am not sure how much power this sucker puts out and I am wanting to replace the stock speakers in this puppy. I have read most of the threads in regards to components and Polk Dx7 and all that, so I am looking to see with speaker setup matches the best. I would LIKE to stay with the stock HU if possible, as I am really waiting to upgrade that to the Visteon Mach MP3 HU when it becomes available.
Thanks for the info.
Regards,
Jeff in Houston

Ya, jeff. I wouldn't retain that POS if you like good tunes. I chucked my stock Visteon AND those "speakers" (which, by the way, have a weird plastic grille attached to each one...SO you're playing music thru that AND the door panel plastic, too!! yeck!) I shopped around and got nice deals from different car aud. shops on DiamondAudio M551 (5.25 round!) for the front and Kicker Impulse 6.5 rounds for rear fill. I made special plates to fit with little trouble. I replaced that Head Unit with a nice Blaupunkt "Munchen" (GREAT unit, but the display is not good during the day). The sound diff is incredible! Money well spent. You don't have to get real fancy, but you do have to do your homework. You might start here:
