Question Downward firing sub?

I have heard people say that a downward firing sub sounds better. How much room do you need between the box and the floor? Is 1 1/4" enough? Or would I be better off firing it up with 2" clearance between the seat and the box? Any advice greatly appreciated!

Question

I have a '98 so your boxes wont work. Im going to raise my rear seat 2" and make a box that will fit. I have quite a shop so making it wont be hard but I just didnt know how much clearance I would need. Do you know how much space is between your box and the floor? Thanks!

Larry,

1 1/4" should be enough, but it really depends on the sub. See if you can find the specs on the sub, they should tell you a peak excursion or something that will tell you how far the sub will travel.

I personally put 2 12" subs under my backseat and I just built 1 giant box and put a divider in it to make it a 2 chamber box. I installed the subs towards the ends of the box and used the center hump to hold the box off the floor where the subs are. It sounds great!

I have a downfiring sub in a custom center console in my Gen1 Lightning..I believe you lose quite a bit of volume..I had to really watch my depth because I was using a Infinity Perfect 12.1 with some like 1/2" of excurision..I have mine spaced up about 2" from the seat bracket/floor..It's loud and all but it seems the more you space it up the louder the bass will be..I found this out when I spaced it up on rags that it got much louder...Just some food for thought.

Question

Sandman

I have a question for you. I see that you also have a '98. How did you make the box? Did you raise the seat (if so how much)? I was going to do the same thing with the hump but with the brace in the middle you can only put one speaker in. Did you take the middle brace out? What is the top mounting depth of your 12"? Thanks for any help!

Thumbs down

In order to use any downfire system in a Extended cab, you must raise the seat.

When I went shopping for a system, the biggest obstical to overcome was that I refused to raise the seat.

So, I had a custom "Up Fire" Box built and just took 1st place in regional 1000 watt class, and 2nd in "Best Boom" overall. And I still retain the back seat in the stock position.

Kenwood 4015 CD Head
Kicker EQ/Pre amp
Kenwood 300 Watt Amp (Bridged) w CO
Kicker 700 Watt amp (Bridged) W co (For Subs)

4 6" Kicker 610s
2 2.25" Pzo's
2 12" Kicker Impulse
2 Custom built "Deco" Kick Panels

Acheived a "Perfect" .08 CF under rear seat.

It can be done, but it ain't cheap.

Total price installed
$3960.33

But Im happy , and very impressed :-)

Im assuming you have a new F150? The pre 2000 ones had a really low seat and its just about impossible to fit anything under there much less 2 12"s I raised my seat 1.75" and its actually more comftorable now. Im going to start making a box for 2 10"s this weekend.

Larry,

Sorry, it took so long to get back.

1) How did you make the box?
I just used some MDF board and made on giant box and then put a divider right down the middle to separate the two subs. I believe the volume of each side of the box was .8 cu/ft. I don't remember the exact dimensions for the box off the top of my head, but it was something like... 53"w x 6.5"t x 13"d. It ended up that I could have gone 50"w instead, and that would have been better because I am having problems installing my seat due to the fact that the box was almost too wide to fit the seat over.

2) Did you raise the seat (if so how much)? Did you take the middle brace out?

Yes, I did take the middle brace out. I have been riding around the past few months without a back seat(and I'm tired of that now), so I went today to a local company who is going to build me a custom lift for my truck. They measured a 3.5" lift necessary to mount my back seat. I know that that sounds like alot of lift, and it is. But I rarely have people riding in the back of my truck and from what I have read elsewhere on this board alot of people find the rear seat more comfortable when it is lifted. If you do lift your seat, try to find someone local. The only lift kits I have found online run you about $100. I am having the 2 side brackets and 2 seatbelt brackets built for $20 + tax.

3) What is the top mounting depth of your 12's?

6".

I should get my brackets for my seat around Friday, or maybe Monday. I will let you know if I have any problems.

GetsumJ,

Welcome to the board!

That is a pretty impressive system that you have there. You have the one thing that I lack, a component set. I plan on getting that in the next few months(when i get a little more $$).

I'm interested in your subs. You say that you mounted them firing up. Are they freeair subs or did you build 2 seperate boxes? Also, how much space is between the bottom of the seat and the subs? One of the reasons I went with the down firing subs is because there are tons of little screws sticking through the bottom of the rear seats in these trucks.

If you have any pics I would love to see them. You also say that you were in a local competition. What did your system meter at? I haven't metered mine yet, but it hits pretty hard.

And one last question, where did you mount your amps. I have a feeling you mounted one under each seat, that is the way I did mine.

Go here. They aren't down-firing, but they sound good. I would recommend the larger box. www.awpd.net

Larry,

Its built in one single box that extends accross under the seat. The 700watt Kicker is mounted between right on top of the "Hump". It all fits, though the box sticks out in front of the seat about 3/4 of an inch or so. It also slides out for easy access. Again, I cannot take credit for the installation. They guy that did it "Shades" had it all blueprinted on paper and installed to exact specs. He actually talked over my head quite a bit. I just went in and said, "I wanna win Comps" with it.

When they gauged my system, it registered a " 31 " , but I have no idea what that means. It was enough to win. :-)

My truck is posted in the members trucks page. Amazingly, I accomplished that. LOL

Thanks for comments. I am a Proud Truck owner, and I also have a 2001 Drop Top GT, no tunes, keepin it all original. But, working for Ford, the "A" plan is great.
