Sub Box for ext. cab
Does anybody have any good ideas for Sub box placement in the extended cab F-150? I checked into the 2 piece box that you can get for under the seat but I'm not willing to drop the 6-800 dollars on those. I've thought about building a box for under the seat but I have no idea what dimensions i should use and where to place the subs in the box. Has anybody out there actually built their own box for under the seat? I have (2) 10" Rockford Fosgate Subs. Thanks in advance! -ZRracer

ZRracer...
I was just wondering how you plan on getting both of those 10" subs under the rear seat...1 large box or two smaller ones??? Unless you are planning on getting a rear seat lift kit and/or don't mind your boxes sticking out a ways from underneath the rear seat, it seems to me that you could possibly fit one 10" sub under there, but I don't know about fitting both of them, due to the size of enclosure that a 10" sub is going to require to sound decent. Also, do those subs have a fairly shallow mounting depth? If not, that might be another issue, since without a rear seat lift, it might be a pretty tight fit. For my truck, I built two smaller (11" deep by 7" high by 16.5" wide) sealed boxes and placed one on each side of the transmission hump with each sub firing down into the floor. I then mounted my amp between the boxes. They don't stick out at all and look pretty nice. Please note that I have a 2" rear seat lift kit though, otherwise they could have only been about 5" high. This might be a possibility for you too, but again, I don't know if you're going to have enough room under that seat for two 10" subs, unless your box(es) stick out a little ways or unless you get a rear seat lift kit.
Hey, it's nice to see a fellow snowmobiler on this board. Which ZR do you ride??? I have a 98 ZR600 EFI Limited Edition...hopefully it'll snow a ton this year so I can put more than a few hundered miles on it like I have the past two winters! I live in southern Minnesota and ride in Minnesota and Wisconsin and we haven't had much of any snow the past couple of years. Keeping my fingers crossed this year!!!

MattT-
Thanks for your reply, definitely some helpful info! I was planning on using 2 seperate boxes, one on each side of the bracket that mounts to the floor. I was also going to build it up over the tranny hump and put my amp under the driver seat. I really haven't checked yet on what air volume I need for my subs yet but you might be right on the raising kit. I definitely don't want the box to extend out past the seat. I'll let you know what I end up doing. As for Snowmobiling. . I also have a 98'ZR 600! I went with the Carbs though. They're talking more snow this year but I'll believe it when I see it. The last 2 years I did most of my riding up in the U.P. of Michigan and Montana. If you've never been to West Yellowstone Montana on your sled you are really missing out! Feel free to email me if you want to learn more about some cool riding places and if you want to trade any tech tips on Arctic Cats. Now we need a ZR600online!! Thanks for your help! -ZRracer

ZRracer,
I'm not sure which model your subs are, but I just checked Rockford Fosgate's web page and it looks like you're going to need at least .625 cu ft (They recommend .625 cu. ft. for the 10" Punch DVC, and .75 cu. ft. for the 10" Punch XLC and the 10" Punch). Also, the shallowest mouting depth of any of these subs is about 4". With these things in mind, along with the fact that you don't want the boxes sticking out from underneath the rear seat, I'm guessing you're probably going to need to raise the rear seat a little bit. You might be able to make one sub work on the passenger's side, since you can extend the box over the transmission hump to get some extra volume, but I don't know how you'd get enough volume on the driver's side because of the mounting bracket on the drivers side of the transmission hump. Even with a 2" lift, I was only able to get about .45 cu. ft. on the driver's side. I probably could have built it a LITTLE bigger, but not too much.
As for snowmobiling...yeah, they said we were supposed to get more snow last year too, but that didn't happen, so I'm not believing any forecasts for this winter until I start seeing some snow. As a matter of fact, I made my first trip out to West Yellowstone around Christmas last year and yeah, it was pretty awesome. The EFI worked really well out there. I'd like to head out there again sometime in the next few years, but I'd make sure it wasn't during the holiday season, because there were so many people out there that the trails got beat up in a hurry. I'm hoping to make it up to the U.P. sometime this winter too.
