Question Up or Down facing Sub?

I see sub boxes come in either up or down facing, any pro's or con's? It seems an up facing would get irriating to whoever is sitting over it (or maybe not).

Also, does it matter that the box is thin and not square? Does the shape of the box matter or is it strictly cubic inches?

I believe down facing is better. I can't tell you why, but most people seem to go that way. I don't think box shape matters nearly as much as volume, material, or filler. Unless it's an extremely radical shape that might enter bandpass territory. Hope this helps! WHat sub are you going to use?

I'm not sure, I have heard of some people here using probox, subbox, and some others. I will probably hit up a few local stereo shops nearby to see what they recommend also. I have a 12" sub (can't remember the brand right now) in a
Q-logic box in my excursion and it sounds pretty good with 800 watts going to it. For my truck though I can't afford to lose any room in the back so it will have to go under the seat.

Most boxes for F150's will go under the back seat. And it definatley sounds better down facing. I dunno why, but when putting in my subs, I wired it and tried it out. Then flipped it around and it just had extra umf. Turn the sub in your excursion around and compare.

But everything I have experienced and read has said to do downfacing.

Box shape does matter. As a matter of fact a square box is the worst shape for a speaker. What happens is the internal waves bounce right back at the sub. An ideal enclosure would be round but we all know how hard it is to make a round box. Adding non 90 degree angles to the box reduces the amount of undesireable waves reflected directly back at your sub.

But - that isn't as much of a concern as size of box, etc..

frostby,

Do you think there would be an audible difference when comparing a sphere to a square? Do you think it would be worth the effort in building one?

I had this same question before, I beleive the down facing are more popular. There are a few different manufactures of custom shaped boxes out there with a wide variety of price ranges. Good luck in your search
