Help a rookie design his low end

Hey guys,
I'm learning a lot about car audio here. I'm ready for my sub thread.

I'd like to get either a single great 12" (prefered) or two 10s.

Let me start by saying I dont have the ability to build my own box because I have no woodworking tools or garage. I live in an appt.

So, after a lot of looking around I find that nobody had boxes to fit a single 12 under the back bench of a SC. But there are a few places that sell boxes for single or double 10s. If I want to store the sub under the seat and I dont plan to build a box myself am I pretty much locked into a 1 or 2 10" setup? Or is there a box for a 12" somewhere? I thought about getting a 12 in a normal box and just setting it on the floor behind the front seats or in the seat of the back bench.... but I'm not sure how secure this is. I wouldn't want a speaker box flying around if I had to stomp the breaks!!!

My friend said that 2 tens will be just as good as a 12, but I thought I'd run it by the experts.

My situation is that I'll probably have some 6.5 components in the front doors running off about 90-100W per side. I want to add some great low end and I am mostly concerned with SQL. I'll be honest, I want them to hit HARD and TIGHT. I want to be able to feel the bass but at the same time I dont want loose rattley floppy bass. Is this going to be possible with a couple 10s? I mostly listen to Metal/Hard Rock (Tool, Mudvayne, Godsmack, etc), Classic Rock (Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, Sabbath), and some Techno (house and trance mostly).

I'm sure I'll have lots more questions as I flush out the details, but I wanted to start with the 2 10s vs. a 12 issue.

Thanks a lot guys,
-Marshall

2 10's will be louder than 1 12. If you try to stuff that 12 under the back seat you'll probably be starving it for air space inside the enclosure and it wouldn't perform to its full potential anyway. I'd say stick with 10's unless you're gonna do a seat lift to create more room. Even 1 strong 10" sub will let you feel and hear the bass. Do keep in mind that you're limited on mounting depth... most of the pre-fab boxes made for under the back seat usually get about 5.5" of mounting depth.

Don't just opt to set the box anywhere (i.e. in the floor board between front and back seats, or in the back seat). That just looks awful and living in an apartment complex you're asking for someone to steal it if its just sitting there in the back seat. At least if you put it under the back seat it will be out of sight from outside the truck.

In a small sealed enclosure... I doubt very seriously any sub would give you loose horrible sounding bass. It should be very accurate but it will still get plenty loud to be felt within the truck as well as easily heard inside and outside the truck.

I would stick with the 10's with that small of an enclosure space, personally.

I just had a probox from www.proboxrocks.com installed in my supercrew with 1 kicker comp vr 8" hooked to a kicker kx150.2 amp. I think it sounds awesome. They make custom boxes for many vehicles, you should check them out. They can do some custom work too b/c my box was supposed to be for a 10, but I had it cut for an 8.
