Living in Hotlanta

My wife just got a job offer in Hotlanta. While considering it I was just wondering to the east of the city how far out is it before you get to the burbs? I was looking at Barrow county.

I currently live in a built out county in Florida. I am tired of living in a city. If she has to commute a distance that's fine. I can find a job anywhere.

I moved down here almost 5 years ago and the area is BOOMING with residential construction.

Basically, the Burbs don't exist until you get outside of the 'Perimiter' which is I-285.

You will need to consider where you will be working and plan accordingly. - Atlanta traffic is TERRIBLE and your commute will more than likely be rather unpleasant if you choose to live in the Burbs.

If you have children and want a quality education for them, then you need to seriously consider private schooling. - Although the Fayette County School System which is on the South Side is ranked pretty high. I'm not sure if there is an equivelent school system in the other outlying areas.

Hope this helps.

Al

Atlanta traffic is more than terrible..it's crazy.. I live in Athens which is 51 miles northeast of Atlanta...if you leave at the wrong time in the am it takes 1 1/2 to 2 hours to get to Atlanta...if you leave at the "right" time about 1 hour 15 minutes to get there....Barrow county is right off highway 316 (which goes straight to Atlanta) and is closer than Athens....there
are many accidents on Atlanta roads every week...many drivers think of the Atlanta perimeter as their personal Autobaun...Many people daily commute from Athens and Winder etc to Atlanta each day...the driving is stressfull....I consider Atlanta traffic to be WORSE than Baltimore, DC and Boston....What you might like to do is check out some of the local Atlanta TV stations to get a feel for Atlanta...Barrow is a nice county (still somewhat rural) and property taxes are fair...I wish you luck in your decision...

I hate Atlanta traffic. I live about two hours south of ATL, but I have to pass through Atlanta every now and then to go to Marietta for business. So, I leave at about 0500 so I can try to hit 285 before 0700, and it's still pretty rough then.

I'm a po' ol' country boy, it's nice and quiet in my neighborhood.

Thanks for the replies. I had forgotten I posted here. We decided too many things had to fall just right to pull off the change without going bankrupt, so passed on the job.

Bethleham is in Barrow. I live in Barrow just over the Gwinnett county line and commute to Marietta every day. Traffic sucks.

If you move to Barrow county, please stay away from Winder. There are more hicks per capita there than maybe anywhere in America. I would recommend trying to go to south Hall county or Jackson. Barrow would be cheaper as far as property goes, but your house wouldn't appreciate as quickly either.

If you plan on coming up let me know. I could help show you around if you want.
