First 6.0L (56k warning)

Needing a new daily driver for about 400 miles a week. Been using my 6.4L, but I'd prefer not to, so it can stay connected to the hay trailer for pasture feeding. Was recently on a trip to Florida and found a clean Lariat 2005 4x4 for $7500. I already had a return flight booked that I couldn't canx, so I'll have to take leave next week to fly back one way and drive home.

Ran smooth, AC and cruse control worked, no rust california truck before being moved to florida. It's got some stupid head unit contraption I'll pull and put a stock CD player from Ebay in.

I figure it's a gamble, but could always use the axles on my '95 if it blows up.

56K warning...

Buckle the **** up for another HAMMER DOWN BIG TIME cross country shenanigans adventure! Sorry for the delay, supermotors has been cranky as my knees again.

Started with finishing some training in Texas, but instead of flying back to the ranch in NM, I jumped on a jet to head to Florida.

She needs some love, but let's friggin go!

Ok, checklist time.

Co pilot to help with drive? Check.

Fresh Garmin GPS from Wally World? Check.

Working radio? Nope... Missing antenna.

Gauges to monitor the reactor? Negative on working Edge display. Gonna roll Three Mile Island instrumentation in classic 1979 style.

Tools and supplies? 1400 spent at Harbor Freight.

Cigarette lighter to charge my potato phone? Nope.

Clear for takeoff.

Called it around Shreveport. I'm not the super trucker I used to be. Worked out because the copilot was getting a free hand me down ride. Loaded up a U-Crawl the next morning. Who needs a spare tire when your 6.0L totes a spare car? Way more ****y now knowing I have a way to not be trapped on the side of the road on the long cross Texas drive.

New Mexico in sight!

Well that was thankfully uneventful and only spent 300 in diesel. For sure the truck has a tune as it'll bark the tires and rolls coal off the line if you don't let the turbo spool before stomping on it all the way. The 5R110 shifts crisp, but still wish it was a ZF6. Oh well, a deal is a deal

Let's get to work on the interior.

So this Edge is dead. Have 12v on the obd2 port, and then tried plugging it into the 6.4L with no sign of life. Any market on salvaging these? I'd like to know what the tune is.

Had this show up quick so I can make sure the coolers are up to spec. Not as fancy as the DashDaq on the 6.4L, but I'm not paying those crazy prices.

I see the audio boys were sharp on the job. This all gets the delete.

Back seat was a pain to fold. Oh, this stupid thing was in the way. Had to unbolt the whole seat to yeet it to the curb.

Your days are numbered. I just want to play CDs, cassettes, and listen to the AM radio with the steering wheel controls.

eBay for the win with a great deal on a stock unit. Came with bonus disk that accidentally ended up firing across the yard like a frisby.

Forgot to get pictures, but also put in the stock style upfitter switches while dash was apart. Way different install procedure than the 07-10 trucks. Had to watch a youtube video, but now we are looking and working classy.

Well, the speedometer does not match the tire size.

Called the Ford dealer for a reprogram, but the service manager said if there is a tune, his computer will scramble the ECU if he tries to correct the tire size. Looks like I'll finally have to buy a laptop tuner thing.

Degass bottle looked a little sketchy, and I couldn't see how much coolant was even in it.

Easy fix.

This guy was just chillin' though. Haynes manual is on order to see what the wire colors go to.

FINALLY, this showed up. Them dang kids with their fake Raptor grills are the worst. I'm thankfull it didn't have stupid rims to go with.

Always a good night around here for a fire.

Well, friend borrowed the 6.0L and it's now doing the hot no restart after shut down and there was an oil puddle where it was parked. Had it towed back to the house and it fired up on the rollback. Time to look for leaks in the high pressure bits and bobs I suppose. Ordered an IPR, STC improvement kit, o rings for everything, standpipes, dummy plugs, and pressure testing adapters. We shall see!

Well dang it. Sitting waiting on new injector cups, and I think I figured out where the oil leak is coming from. The top plate was clean yesterday, but now the oil cooler cover is just bleeding down the slight tilt. Didn't really want to pull the intake for that job, but now's the time to do it.

All back together and fired up on third crank with great pressure. I didn’t get the egr coolant hose on far enough and it leaked the gallon of water I started with. Shimmied it on more and no leaks. Now neither the primary or secondary alternator are charging. Not a lot of research on troubleshooting dual alternator trucks so I’ll start with the basics and a meter. Bleed out all the air in fuel and coolant last night with it jumper cabled to the 6.4 on high idle so it wouldn’t undervolt the FICM.

20 mins of video nonsense.

www.ficmrepair.com got me fixed up with a big honkin' USAdiesel alternator overnight shipping. The "second" alternator is a stupid system that doesn't even really work the way you would want a backup alternator to work, and its second pulley system is in the way of doing anything. Best I could figure the fan always has to come out to change the belt. Not side of the road friendly. It all got the delete. Then like a moody girlfriend, she breaks my heart again.

Bought a 6.4L parts truck that came with a ranch hand bumper. The frame ends don't quite line up and needed some drilling to mount 8 bolts securely. Also there's a gap under the turn signals. Maybe not ideal, but I spent less on the whole donor truck than what a the correct 6.0L truck bumper would cost new.

Fell behind on these updates. Did a block heater test, then the next day a cold start without the block heater for glow plug verification.

Then had a three week trip that was unexpected with recovering a broken helicopter. Truck sat at airport and I was really wondering if there would be a parasitic draw I've not had the chance to test for.

For good behavior I ordered two matching good tires and ditched two of the ****ty mud tires on there.

Still gotta get the speedo fixed so the 35s are correct, but happy with the handling.
