Just bought a 2001 Supercab 2wd 5.4 truck. Has around 200k on it, clean title.... needs an engine. I picked it up for $750, and besides the engine its in pretty good shape. Needs clean up for sure.... i drove it onto and off the trailer but its got a knock. Those who have experienced something similar, what did it end up being? I plan to start looking into in a few weeks.
Sounds to me that the noise is in the valve train. You may be able to remove the valve covers and see what the problem is.
That was the plan. Pop the cam covers first. I heard you can get the oil pan off the 2wd trucks without pulling the engine so that was gonna be my next step if the valvetrain doesn't show anything.
I'm not so sure of a reman engine. If the bottom end appears to be ok(like not destroyed), I'll probably have a local place go through the heads and just have them machine and do a shortblock for me.
