HELP!! Burning Oil Smell!

I have noticed over the past week or two that immediately after shutting down my L I can smell burning oil coming from under the hood. It seems to be getting worse, although I do not see smoke and I have not been able to find anything that looks like an oil leak around the manifolds, although maybe I am just not able to see it.

Have any of you guys experienced this problem?

I was getting ready to install a 4 pounder, but looks like I better wait until I get this issue resolved before doing so...

Any help you guys can give will be greatly appreciated!

Sammy

Sounds like the dreaded leaking head gasket.
I don't have it yet, but I believe it's the pass side rear dripping down on the exhuast.

HOPE IT'S NOT

I have a similar problem that I can't put my finger on....Whenever I park the truck, I get a burning rubber smell that I can't seem to trace...Nothing on the exhaust, nothing visible under the hood, and the belts are not excessively hot when I shut the engine down and check them...Aggravating isn't it....As far as your problem goes, jack up the truck and look all over the back of the engine for any leaking oil, and see what you can find....Good luck..

Ya I plan on getting up under the truck this weekend and trying to find the source.... when I first noticed the truck started smelling different I thought at first it smell kinda like burning rubber, but after a couple of days it definately started smelling like burning oil. And last night and this morning the smell was noticably stronger and definately oil.

Man, this really SUCKS.....

I smell a "burned oil" odor after shut-down too. It was worse when I had 'breathers' on the cam-covers as oil was being forced out of the breathers onto the exhaust manifolds. I went back to 'stock', except for an oil breather cap and an oil seperator. I still smell it but I'm not concerned as it uses/loses almost no(some shows up in the seperator) oil.

Hopefully, neither of us have a leaking head gasket???

Look by the rear corner on pass side of motor. It usually runs down betweenblock and bell housing. and hits the top of the ehxust pipe. Hope this helps!! Had this problem myself!! Artie

So what did you have to do to fix it? A new head gasket? Also did you have to get under the truck to see where the oil was coming from?

Thanks!

My truck has 18,200 miles and the smell started about 200 miles ago. Daily driven, about 25 1/4 mile passes, stock engine. Used but not abused.

Like many others I had this problem. It started with the smell of burning oil and it ended up being the passenger side head gasket. Ford replaced it under warranty with a new "more flexable" design. Haven't had a problem since.

I wonder why it is usually the passenger side that goes out? Is there something different with this side? I'll let you guys know what I find when I get under the truck... thanks for the help.

I have the same problem too. I notice on my 12,000 mile oil change. A small amt. of oil on the bellhousing. Still driving it. I wiped the residue off 3 days ago & haven't driven since. Maybe it'll be that leak that some people say "fixes" itself.

Well thats also the side I, lost a plug in. Seems at least from what I, have seen the pass side is the leak side and loses more plugs than the drv side!! Artie

Guess what! I just picked up my L from the dealer who replaced my head gasket--passenger side.

I smelled burning rubber when engine shut down.

This appears to be more common that I thought.

Hopefully you're under warranty.

Good luck!
