This is a general collection of some of the Castano Leather care threads that have been started here within the King Ranch F-150 Forum. We've been discussing this topic for nearly 5 years now and have attempted to consolidate a lot of this information into this particular thread to serve as a 'one stop shop' for many of the more popular choices that our members are utilizing.

Feel free to browse what's being said about these products and post questions/comments within the respective threads listed here. Please don't start new 'Conditioner' threads unless you've done a quick search to determine if we've talked about it previously. If we have, please post within the thread that you found with your search. If we haven't, please feel free to spin a new thread!

Fellow KR owners... the work is on your shoulders now...

Please do a little bit of searching and post the threads that you think are most relevant to this cause. I'd like to keep discussions to a minimum (in fact, let's not discuss any conditioners here). Just post a link to the thread that you feel is pertinent to this cause and I'll bring it into a single post that will be immediately beneath my first post. Once we've established a nice list, I'll close the thread, copy thread urls into one post to consolidate, and update it as members forward additional links via PM or email.

By doing it this way, we keep it clutter free and a vast amount of info is kept within one post immediately below the first post in the thread.

I am very well pleased with my 2005 KR Screw even though it is a gas hog compaired to 1998 F150 XLT that we also bought new. If Billy Cook can produce leather saddles that are made to be rode hard, always look new, and don't require regular care, why doesn't KR take some lessons and do the same. Tony Lama makes full quill ostrich boots that are awesome and only need treated twice a year. Wilson leather coats are the same. It seems to me that if KR requires $15 cream 24/7 they are taking a shortcut and not fully curing the leather. That isn't what I call cowboy tuff. Talk about suicidal, just wear a pair of Wranglers with riveted pockets, concho belt, or take a puppy in your KR, even once.

FYI: I used the Zymol Creme Leather Conditioner on my 06KR and it worked great. I looked it up before use and it is all natural, (just like the over priced KR brand conditioner). It didn't leave a slick residue on any of the surfaces and didn't darken the leather either- it made the seats, steering wheel and armrest feel soft and supple...as they were when we purchased the truck. One other thing I really liked was the fact that it has no smell like some of the other conditioners that I looked at which had a "leather smell".

I purchased at Wal-Mart for about $7 and based on my first use, I'd estimate the bottle containing enough conditioner for 6 applications. I highly recommend this product.

Okay, I just bought a KR and now after reading these leather care posts, I am concerned about it. I read some good suggestions for cleaning and conditioning the Castano leather which seems like a lot of effort. My 01 Expedition leather still looks great with only annual cleaning and conditioning. Has anyone tried using a leather protector on the KR leather to prevent stains and discolorations? This stuff is like a buck leather which needs to be protected or will that just ruin it?

 

Don't read too much into all this stuff about leather care.

A lot of what has been posted is concerned with bringing back leather that has been badly treated or as a result of using inferior products.

I, along with several others, am on my 3rd King Ranch and have never spent more than a couple of hours total per year looking after the leather.

In fact if I admitted it , probably an hour would cover it.

Even with my Expedition and the extra row of seats 20 minutes usually covers it, and I do them about 3 times a year (And that's with the heat of South Texas)
My seats still look as good as new and that's the way they will stay !

 

Thanks Lenticular! I started freaking out after reading all of this about the right and wrong products and methods for taking care of this leather. I was starting to wish I went for the Lariat with leather...but...not now!
