Will I kill my truck doing burnouts?

If you just want to see the smoke and hear your motor wind up tight, you can mix some bleach and water for a really slick solution to get rid of the traction and let her go. Tires break loose very easily and there is no need to power break once they are spinning. This method lessons the drive line shock and keep you from having to really get rough on the transmission and u-joints.

does the 1st gear selection on the auto give more torque?

Putting it into first gear apply a clutch band that keeps the clutch pack from slipping. It will be better for the equipment.
That burnout i posted was in drive. I have done them clear through 3rd gear before with out any issues. But I would never recommend it to anybody. It is hard on equipment for sure.
