Email's been back up for well over a week. PM has never been enabled on these forums.

If a person wants to be contacted by another member outside of the forum, they should activate the ability to receive email via a setting in their control panel.

Private messaging is one of the most idiotic things ever added to forum software. Is it 100% counter-intuitive to what a forum is for, one-to-many communication.

I have no interest in people forwarding me spam PM's or getting in the middle of PM conversations, which will be the ultimate result.

Use email, that's what is was designed for. If someone you want to contact via email has that functionality turned off, that is their decision, not ours.

Also factor in that, as Doug noted, it can be a resource hog. On a small forum with a few thousand members, perhaps not, on a large forum with tens of thousands, definitely.

We'd have to draw a line on the number of messages people could store. We'd get constant complaints that it's not enough or indivdual requests for more.

Email is completely under your control. You decide what to save, what to delete and who can contact you. It is a private communication that has nothing to do with us and we have no interest in getting involved in.

No worries. You didn't start anything. Just wanted to offer up my point of view.

This site (moderators) is alot nicer than NLOC. It seems the moderators on that site are full of themselves, as are many on other sites I have been on.

Thanks Blown...

It's always nice to get a little bit of kudos every now and then...

Generally speaking, moderating is a thankless job. Few people actually realize what we do and the problems that we all deal with... again, I appreciate the kudos!

I came over here from mustangworld, and I used the PM's over there a lot. They are a great way to communicate. I can see the resource point. But the PM's are definetally nice, especially when you are looking for a one-too many post. Isn't there a way to make a link to your IM screen name? If so, everyone could put that into there sigs, and use IM as PM. nice.
