Fraud Scam

Hello!
Anyone have this? I got an offer from a jerk in London to buy my truck, but he wanted to send me a cashiers check for mor than the amount listed. I was then to refund him the difference ($4555) back through Western Union. I finally found after checking with several banks that the check was a fraud, and if I had cashed it an sent the $4555 I would never have seen it again. There should be a big warning for classified users that if they encounter this, to not even respond to these offers. No one in their right mind who was serious about buying a vehicle would send more than is necessary. Maybe you could shed some light on this and make this info more available to the users of this site.
Thanks

This is the way the world works.. Buyer & Seller beware. If it sounds funny, it is funny. Why the hell would someone send you MORE than your asking? Danger! Also, avoid so-called 'escrow' services and pretty much anything other than cash or certified check. Also, never hand over the merchandise until you've had the check inspected and cleared by your bank.

Happy reading.

For about two years now (or more), it has said on the classified reply form:

Please be aware of a scam currently being used against members of sites of this nature. An individual contacts you about buying parts you post for sale. He then sends you a cashier check for thousands of dollars more than the purchase price. Claiming its an innocent mistake (such as saying the check was intended for a different sale), he asks you wire (Western Union) the difference back to him. After all, a cashier's check is supposed to be good as cash, right? Wrong. The check he sends is a counterfeit check that's so well done your bank will accept it. A few days later, after you've wired him the money, your bank will notify you that the check is a counterfeit and you then owe them the money (banks aren't responsible for bad check deposits to your account, only for bad check withdrawals).
Granted, anyone receiving replies to their classifieds will not see this, but my point is that this is a scam that has been around for several years.

Bottom line...buyer AND seller beware.
