Speedometer

Hey everyone this is my first time posting and I was hoping someone could help me.

Truck is a 96 F-150 5.0 5spd 4x4, problem is my speedometer jumps up and down about 5 mph anyone know what would cause this?

Also just had clutch replaced could they have messed something up?

Thanks

I had the exact same problem. There are 2 solutions. Replace your VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) in the rear end. It is about $12 from a Ford dealer. If that doesnt solve it, your gauge cluster is going out, which can be very expensive. I was lucky and got a Cluster from a junkyard for mike $100, or something like that.

If you need a gauge cluster, ley meknow. I've got one without tach from a 96, IIRC it's got about 35K miles on the odometer.
I want $25 plus shipping. If you just want the speedometer/odometer module (probably all that you'd need) I 'll sell you that for the same price

No difference. The PSOM (programmable speedometer odometer module) is the same for either version and plugs into the center slot on the instrument cluster. When I changed the stock panel in my 96 to one with a tach, I kept the original PSOM and swapped it into the new cluster. The one I have for sale came out of the cluster with tach.

Strange I dont quite understand what you are talking about with the Speedo module. When my speedo went crazy, it wasnt the module, it was the cluster itself. Are we talking about the same thing. Because there is some off white box shoved behind the cluster that says something like .../odometer module. If that is what you are talking about, that is not what goes bad in the old trucks. It is the cluster themselves. Or the speedo sensor in the rear end. Even after I changed my cluster, everything worked fine until the truck got above 60mph. I replaced the speedo sensor and now it works perfectly.

The cluster is basically a shell into whch various instruments plug. The PSOM is the box that plugs into the center of the cluster. It contains the gauge face and electronics for the speedometer and odometer, the reset and select buttons and has an electronic plug-in connector on the rear which goes to the PCM. It is a complete unit, nothing else involved.
