Question Maf?

What year did Ford put Mass-Air and get rid of the Speed Density system in the 5.8L F-150?

Thanks!!

96' was MAF OBD-II

To my knowledge, and Ive looks around alot, there is no such thing as a MAF-OBD-I 5.8 engine. Just to worn you if you care about that.

I do believe Gamehunter is right on no M/A opn 5.8 but I've seen 94 5.0's with it. Ford Motorsport makes a conversion kit for those with the urge to go M/A on their trucks. It goes for around $750 and comes with every nut and screw. It can also be made to work with a 5.8 according to the catalog. Hope this helps some

I was told that it would be good to have Mass Air if you are going to be putting on cylinder heads, FIPK, throttle body, etc..... I ask this because I plan on buying those things and I would like to know if I need that first.

Oh yeah, if any of you know, do I "NEED" a chip if I plan on putting on these things or is it just recommended.

Thanks!!

I do believe you can "get away" with alot of mods on the mass air system without a chip if you don't get real radical because unlike the speed density system the mass air can learn new things to accomodate the mods.

Just my .02 (and my 302 IS mass air) but personally rather than spend the money on mass air I would spend it on a custom chip burn for the speed density.

I think 80% of the difference is hype. If you are doing major mods like heads and cam, etc you would likely still need a chip reburn on mass air. I've seen posts where Mike (Superchips Mike) recommends a reburn for things such as drastic exhaust mods.

Taking the money used for a mass air conversion and putting it towards other things would go a lot farther IMO. For the record there are speed density trucks running blowers and just about anything else you can imagine.... check over at NLOC.net.

Using the chip route you would benefit in a couple ways... first lower cost and second a hands on tune for your specific mods rather than an off the shelf guesstimate.

As for the chip, the biggest factor is your exact build plan. Such major things like heads would definately benefit from a custom burn, but then again so would our stockers. Getting real time readings on a dyno is simply money well spent with increased performance for the life of the vehicle.

Everything I have read seemed to indicate chips are worthless on 5.8s with SD
I have one and was interested but after looking into stayed away from getting a chip

Does anyone know what size in mm the MAF used in the pre 97 trucks is? Is it the same as on the new trucks. I know some of the new trucks use a plastic MAF, but like 97-99 were aluminum. Are they the same?

The one I have from a 96 302 is a bit difficult to get down inside to measure, but it appears to be 70mm. YMMV.
