Messing with a 99-00 L
Messing with a 99-00 L
I was cruising around tonight, and up ahead, I see what is either a Lightning, or an F-150 sport. I get closer and its an L. I am like sweet!!! We both turn onto a 2 lane smooth street (RARE in New Orleans), and we are cruising about 50, and I rev it and make it downshift, and he creeps up on me, we slow to about 45, where I will actually have some 2nd gear pull, and we both hit it at the same time, he pulls about a truck and a half, then I cam flying up on him, I am saying to myself, he must be a 4.2L, until I get next to him and hear the WHINE of the Eaton. When I get next to him we stay even for about 10mph, then he pulls about a 1/2 truck on me, and we both shut it down, we were really movin, I had the speedo pegged. I also was almost running on fumes <--- Less weight. I was thinking that maybe he had left off the gas, and when I got next to him, he hit it again, but I dont know. We get to the next light and he says "Damn, what you got in there a 460??" I say "No I have a 302 with a few things done" the light goes green and we start moving, and I ask him "what he has done", and he says " this is a Lightning man" I say " I know what an L is, do you have a pulley or a chip or anything, he says no I'm stock" We go our seperate ways, and I was like a little kid, so excited LOL I have heard peeps say that when they take Ls on a test drive, that they arent that impressive "stock" once they get in 2nd. I dont know. I wish I would have gotten to see him go from a stop. I would still love to have one. they are the sweetest trucks!!! That Whine is the greatest sound LOL
Impressive!
And all the Ford lovers said:
Amen.
BTW we just bought a John Deere loader. Something chirp of the turbo or the smell of burnt diesel. *Tim Allen triple grunt*
One of these days I hope to have that wonder ful smell and chirp out of a pre 98 powerstroke.

My guess is that he was just messing with you. When Raoul went to the rally the first year he ended up running against a Lightning. When he did the math, he figured that he got beat by some 30 or so truck lengths.
Raoul has run in the neighborhood of a 15.7 in his truck, so it's no dog for a stock 5.4 either.
Having finally got to drive a Gen 2 Lightning, I can say without doubt it's a bad puppy even in stock form. As for the comment about pulling hard in second gear.... well not all that great. Maybe only as good as my 302 in 4 low climbing a grade. The L pulls harder in 3rd than our trucks do in 1st.
Now I just need a drive in one with a few mods.

Then maybe we were pretty evenely matched in 2nd. I have gotten blow away by a few off the line and on the interstate, but I have never made a 2nd gear run. If he was playing with me, I dont think he would have asked if I had a 460. I think I gave hi ma run for his money. I love this old girl LOL
kinda off the topic but I heard a stock Gen 1 L and blow away a stock Gen 2 L.....but don't get me wrong I would love to have a Gen 1. But then I heard the gen 2's run 11sec 1/4 miles stock.

You guys should check out the L forums, or the "list" over at NLOC. They have gone lower than 11s with Gen 2s already.
With minor bolt ons they are running mid to high 12s. If you look at the list over at NLOC I think a couple managed to get down to around 13.4 bone stock.
The only time any 302 is coming close to Gen 2 acceleration is if the L has broken traction, or is running on 6 cylinders. Even assuming a 16 second 302 vs a 14 second L, anybody that has spent some time at the track knows just how far 2 seconds is in a drag race.
With some mods we can get into Gen 1 times, but my guess is the Gen 2 guy is trolling for bets before he gets in it hard. Winning money at the drags is the fine art of selling a losing proposition, and some guys are good at it. My first experience with a nitrious car came at about half track while I was ahead. I got my butt handed to me fairly quick that night. LOL

The 1/4 mile track is only 1320' long, so a 17' truck makes the whole thing only 81 truck lengths!
30 TRUCK LENGTHS? It was only 19 and you know it!

Beyond 250 feet my depth perception is a bit shaky, so it was an honest mistake!
This also goes the show that the guesstimate of 1/10 being roughly equal to a truck length isn't that far off.
