Question 94 ED04 sucks, or at least mine does.

My truck was just a work truck which came from a fleet of about 60 F-150's, but it is my old truck now. There was only a few of our trucks that did not have the transmission replaced or worked on, including mine. It was done by aamco, but because it was a work truck, they only gave a one year warranty. Well, that is pass and it is starting to give me problems again. It was a complete replacement, other than the case, which was said to be ok. The OverDrive light no longer works on the shift lever. It groans (convertor?) when you slow down and then get back on the gas. It is also "slipping" when going from reverse to drive. Thanks for any help guys.

As far as why the transmissions needed work in the first place, I don't know. A lot of it depends on the history of the vehicle, how it was used etc. Who knows, maybe you got a bad tranny from Ford.

We had one in a '90 E-350 box van that had 250k on it (it honestly wouldnt surprise me if it had 350k, but who knows). We bought it and was told it had 150k on it. My father used it daily as a service vehicle with approx 3,000lbs+ of tools in the back for 3 yrs. It had a "Ford renewal" tranny in it that lasted us 100k+ however long the ppl that had it before us used it. I recently parted the van because body etc was flat worn out, but the tranny still worked. I put the engine in my truck that had 40k on the rebuild. We sold the tranny and as far as I know its still running around.

Aamco sucks. Cottman sucks. I dont trust any chain store places. A nation wide warranty is no good when the people working on them only know which way a nut turns. Anybody smart enough to know about these things has their own shop. Trust the "good 'ol boys" that have been in it for 30 yrs and have to wipe thier hands clean when they take your keys. If you want to pay for a national commercial campaign, forget everything I said. For those that I have offended, my deepest apologies.

Thats my $.02

AAMCO's actually a whole lot worse than that.

Angry I know they suck, but what now?

It was in the companies name when the work was done, so I had no choice. I have my own shop here in my home town that I trust, and I only trust them. I know most chain stores have no idea how to really work on them, but that is why they did a complete replacement. Or at least that is my opinion. Before I got the truck it was driven by the Project Managers, so it did no real work at all. I was the System Integrator, so it did nothing more than hold a laptop and some electronic parts. The most it was ever asked to do was tow a arrow board, which is some thing that I can pull across the parking lot myself. So back to the real question, where do i start checking or looking into the problems before they toast the tranny again.

Ford had a few problems with those trannies, they eventually changed a few things around to fix it, but maybe the new tranny your company had put in was before the updated ones came out??

I would recommend an aftermarket trans cooler if you put another tranny in. There is no such thing as trans fluid that is too cold. A tranny cooler will virtually double the life of any automatic tranny no matter how it is used.
