I had the same problem with my 95 s/c xlt 5.0 4x4. It would hammer second gear and be fine on all the others. The only time i noticed that it didnt do it was when it was cold outside and i had just started and drove away. It would shift normally until it warmed up then would start hammering second again. Never could figure it out. i would like to know the answer as well. Tranny never did give me any probs though.

When its cold out, it shifts normal. Once it warms up it shifts hard from 1st to 2nd.

Anybody find out why????

I had that problem(hard 1-2 shift) with my 96 and it was a bad slave cylinder.
May also want to bleed the line and pump that clutch pedal like 500 times to build up pressure.

sorry, I didn't see this thread when I posted my 'Transmission Question ???' thread. I have a 94 4x4 5.8 w/auto and I'm having the same problem. It just started recently and only does it once a week or so and only after it has been driven 20 miles or so. Wow! I can't believe how many of us are having the same problem. Has anyone been able to diagnose this yet?

Got her fixed.

The problem was the MLPS (Manuel Lever Postioning Sensor) The part was dealer only and cost about $90. The jobs was pretty easy and took me about and hour and half. The dealer wanted to charge me another $109 to do it. Problem is solved. I also notice it doesn't shift funny like it use do when it rained. From what the dealer told me the sensor is junk and they leak. Hope this helps the rest of y'all.

That is great news. I hope that fixes mine also.
Can you give me the Ford part number?

Also where is it located?
On the outside of the tranny or inside it or????

Thanks for the info.

Part number

Now this part number is for a 94 Ford Bronco with the e4od tranny. There is a sensor that does the same on the other transmissions. Not sure what tranny you have or of the only offered the 1.

Part number F5TZ*7A247*AA

The sensor is located on the outside of the tranny on the drivers side. Your shift linkage connets to it and there is a plug on the top of it.

Hope it helps man good luck. The only pain in the *** part is changing the plug. Just hard to get a good reach on it to work in there.

Good try but it did not fix mine. It still does the same thing. Another suggested that I check the throttle position sensor. Anybody try that yet?

AHHH.

Sorry man. Well rest assured the sensor probably would of went bad anyway

I've never heard of a TPS causing this but they are easy to check. Have a volt meter? Check the volts going to the TPS. There should be .05 volts at idle. If this is wrong then adjust it by turn it clock or counter clockwise. If the voltage is jumping at all the sensor is bad. Easy replacment. If you have a Haynes or Chiltons it will tell you what two wires you need to hook the voltmeter up to. If you don't have one let me know and I'll check in mine for ya.

Good luck man. If you where in the Detroit Area I know a great trans guy who could take a look at it for ya. He works for a tranny place but does side work in the shop after hours. Great deal quality work.

From what I read on the MLPS, it was just a matter of time before it went bad anyway, so I just got to it before it went bad

I'll try looking into it a bit myself first but I'll keep the Detroit thing in mind. I'm about 2 1/2 hours from Detroit, so that would be a possibility.

Meanwhile, I'll try measuring the TPS and see if that does anything strange.

I also noticed that it seems to do it more often on a sharp right hand turn ???? Now that is really strange.

I guess it's time to go pick up a manual and dig into it.

Thanks
