I replaced the rear main seal in my 89 F-150 with the 300 six. You remove the transmission and flywheel to get at the rear main. If the leak is slight leave it alone, as the new seal will begin to leak soon anyway. It is a job well worth doing if the transmission ever has to be removed for some other reason.

What he said. Leave it if it isnt that bad. Dropping the tranny will be a day job. Wait till you need tranny work or engine work if you can. The new seal shouldn't leak if you are carful when installing it and the crank doesn't have burrs.

oil leak

I had an oil leak that appeared to be coming from the area between the transmission the bell housing. The problem was diagnosed by my dealer today as a leaking front crankshaft seal. I guess my highway driving was blowing the oil rearward and would leak down off of the frame rail. I just check it a few minutes ago and it appears that the leak has stopped. I'm glad it was only a 154.00 dollar repair. Good luck to you
