I6 Replacement Engine
I6 Replacement Engine
Hey guys, need some advice.
The I6 300 in my dad's 89 F150 died a few weeks ago. He wants to spend the least amount possible to replace it which seems to be buying a junkyard engine.
It would be nice to put a 5.0 or 5.8 in it, but I imagine there would be lots of complications compared to keeping it a 4.9.
Two questions.
1. Do we need to make sure the emissions system routing and all that junk is the same to keep it leagal? That seems to be the only reason we can find to go with an 89 engine as opposed to an early 90's.
2. Once we get an engine, if we go with the local mechanics instead of doing the work ourselves, what's a fair price for the install?
Thanks,
Tim

Putting in the v-8 is not straight forward by any means. Heres what mine looked like.

Any late model 4.9 will work, the most you would have to change are a couple sensors and possibly the engine wiring harness if you found a 96 with MAF. Its not a big deal. Pre 96's wont be MAF and should plug right in and bolt right up. I would look at the wire colors to see if they were the same on each position of the 4 plugs that come off the engine harness. They are generally color coded and would give you a good indication. If they are not the same, do a little checking. The library probably has a Mitchells interchange guide, and a good junk yard should be able to tell you as they will have an interchange guide. Vans use a different harness and would have to be swapped, but again its plug and chug on that.
If you have a mechanic put one in, you might have them price the whole deal. They usually get a junk yard discount and can make better money that way -- better for you. Also, they will generally help you more if you have problems using the engine they chose.
