Electric fan controlers
Electric fan controlers
Ok, my dual 14" China brand fans just wouldnt cool my 351, so I picked up a 19" fan and shroud off a wrecked 2001 crown vic police package. I dont know if the police package has an upgraded fan or not, but it could keep the 265 horse power police cars cool idling and racing them around, I figured it had a good chance at keeping my truck cool. I must be moving in excess of 3500 cfm's since It cools tons better than the 2700 I was supposed to be moving, but it seems to be ample whatever it is.
I know most of you guys that have electric fans have aftermarket setups and stuff and I need some help adviceon wiring and controlers. The fan is a two speed and I temporarily wired the high speed up for tonight to my left over thermostat. The fan has 3 terminals -- a ground, low speed terminal and high speed. I am thinking I will wire in a dash mounted overide switch using a relay, but where can I get a relay? Maybe just the local parts store? More importantly, how do I wire in the 2 speeds? Is there a 2 speed adjustable switch available and do I need relays for that? where can I get it? I think some of the aftermarket fans have the same setup with 2 speeds and all, so Im hoping one of you guys has done this and can offer some knowledge. Thanks.

Wire it up with a relay from any auto parts store, so that your existing t-stat controls the low speed setting. Also, run the high speed wire to another relay that is controlled by a switch inside the car. The way the fan normally works is to only use the low speed fan, unless the a/c is turned on while the low speed is on. That is when the high speed kicks in. Don't worry about switching the low speed off to turn the high speed on, it's designed to receive power to both wires simultaneously. This way, the fan will be completely automatic, and will come on when it's supposed to. But, if you ever decide that it's getting too hot, you can flip the switch, and bump it up to high.
