Ignition on 95 4.9 same as on Mustang??

Is the ignition for my 95 4.9 300 the same as the one in my 89 GT? Would it have the same coil and ignition module?

The reason I ask is that I had purchased a Plasma Booster from www.ignitionsolutions.com for my supercharged mustang. I did not like the way it performed. I was about to send it back but figured I would put it on my 95 F-150 just to see. Well, I can definately tell a difference. At 25 mph in 2nd gear (5spd, 3.55 gears, 31 inch tires) when I punch it, I get a quick chirp of the tires I did not get before. It also seems to have a little more power on the hills.

Here is a link to a test done on this product by Muscle Mustang and Fast Fords in Jan 2002.

The reason I did not like it is because it caused a surging/missing under mild acceleration on my mustang. It was fine at full throttle. I do not notice any problems on my F-150.

The part numbers are different, but the styles are the same.

Take care,

Did you replace just the coil or did you get the whole ignition system?

just the coil...i've heard to many mixed things about the whole ignition system...I know 2 guys both with 95's and 4.9L both with different opinions....one guy(on another site) said how it gave him 10-15 more hp and another(PKRWUD) saying it didn't help at all...I've heard of to many mixed things from all different engines and trucks so I don't know if I want to chance spending the $100 on a POS.

I am not familiar with the system this gentleman is referring to, but I can assure you, if you install a Crane Hi-6, or an MSD ignition control box, and you notice an improvement, it is only because your factory one was starting to fail. A factory, OEM replacement would have given equal or better results. Sorry, but Fords Capacitive Discharge Ignition system ROCKS!

I hate to tell you this, Justin, but this is even more true with coils. If you really believe you have gained power in your truck with a new coil, it's because your old one was building up resistance. I replaced my coil a couple years ago because the chip I installed recommended it, not because I thought it would increase the power.

Take care,
~Chris

I'm sure that the stock coil was building up resistance...I think it may have to do with my little cooling problem I had a while back remember.....BTW when I took out those plugs they were pretty white..weird how the sensor solved the problem...I think originaly my pump went bad because it was squeeling like mad before I replaced it and I guess nocked my sensor outa wack or something.

I can't speak for the I6 but have no doubts that a box and coil helped my 302 considerably.

I've run gaps as large as .080 with plat plugs with no detonation problems. Running a few degrees extra timing (14 total on reg) I would get detonation switching back to stock ignition. I ended up going down slightly on the gaps to find the best place, and to compromise should I ever have to limp home with the stock components should my box fail. Even at my current .070 gap, the stocker will induce detonation under load... with the box and coil I can pound on it loaded and have no problem.

I don't just throw $400 into something without getting a return. This was the main reason I went with Jacobs, the return policy.

I did quite a few timed tests between points, including up an onramp. I also used the onramp for a max speed test. In every test I did, the truck ran stronger with the box.

SOTP the gains were in the low to mid rev ranges. I've done the ignition, intake mods, pulleys, and a cat back. If I could only have one it would be the ignition.

i agree, i tried a coil at first but had absolutly no! gain whatsoever. so i went with the rest (msd ignition) now were talking my power increased my idle smoothed out completely i love it for the simple fact that my engine runs so smooth and clean from idle to the floor just thought id give my 2

OK, I did a test yesterday. Going up a hill between two VASCAR speed trap lines. Floored it at 35 mph at the first line, hit 62mph by the time I crossed the next line. This was all done in 4th gear (5spd) with no shifting or clutching. Disconnected the ignition and retried it. Got the exact same results. I will try it one more time before I send it back for a refund.
