Question AOD - moaning noise in reverse... ?

'90 ext-cab, 302, AOD, 147k mi - I've recently begun to get a moaning/whining noise from under the truck when I shift into reverse. It sounds like a loud PS pump, but it definately isn't that. It only happens in reverse, but not every time. It can be heard while sitting still (with the truck in R). If I shift out of reverse while the noise is happening, it ceases.
Sounds like it's the tranny/in the tranny to me - Anyone have any idea/insight as to what this noise is, or what's causing it? Has anyone had this occur on their truck before?
BTW, I checked, and the fluid is a pretty red color , and appears to be filled to the proper level (I've only had the truck about 6wks).

THanks for any and all help!!

Wade

it could be the reverse band slipping and if it is sorry to tell you but your probably looking at a rebuild soon or a sun gear shell gear starting to come loose they are common on junk chevy 700r4`s but not in the aod but anything is possible or you could have something in the torque converter i would have it checked by a rep. tranny shop but those aod`s arent as tuff as they should be in my opinion i rebuild so many of those i would never own one then again i rebuild so many automatics i would never own any automatic either ill just keep replacing my clutch good luck

Yup, take it to a reputable shop. They can drop the pan, change the fluid and filter for around $80. The bands can be adjusted sometimes, at least that is what I have been told. Dont go to one of those nationwide "everything needs a rebuild place." Go to one of the good ol' boys that has his hands dirty when he asks for your keys. You might be able to get away with this for some time.

Thanks guys. I'll bet it is the reverse band slipping. When I back into my driveway (slight incline), sometimes it feels like the transmission is slipping a tiny bit.

I know what you mean about those bigger national shops - been there done that. I've since starting doing almost everything myself, and know a few good folks that I CAN trust, to use as backup. Heck, maybe I'll get lucky and a servicing will correct it! I'll cross my fingers!

Thanks again!

doubt servicing is going to correct that but like that one guy said take it the good ol boys and let them drop the pan or try checking the seal on the reverse band accumulator piston these are also known for cracking but i do believe there are external band adjustments ''what year and make''? i would try to walk you through it but i do it by feel and have been rebuilding since i was 18 years old so good luck i would get it checked before you trash it if it isnt already and STAY AWAY!!!! from AAMCO and COTTMAN transmission they will tell you it needs rebuilt if it had a cooling line leak
