Blown 4.9L

Well I've been debating about getting rid of my truck because of the problems/headaches it gives me for a new GM 1500, but then I would put myself in a little bit of dept but in the end it would be worth it.....but then I found 2 companies(names are writen down in the truck) that make blowers for my truck since it has Mass Air.
I could get a hold of one for about $2500, I would have to get bigger injectors and a new chip burnt so all together I'm looking at $3000. One of the guys I talked to claimed I could get up to 400 horses...I was LOL in my head...this is coming out of something that pulls maybe 200 horses since I have a intake.
hard decision because I would be happy with something brand new and know that if something breaks it's covered on a warranty.
but then I would love to be rolling around in a blown inline 6, but i would just be waiting for something to break.
I've had this truck for 2 years and it seems like I'm spending more time and money in it fixing crap then I pay monthly on it.

I love my truck, but it is paid for.

Don't laugh at your engine! I saw a modified car with a 4.9 in it pull an 8 second 1/4 mile at the NHRA Finals in Pomona 3 years ago.

Take care,
-Chris

What are the companies? No one else has been able to find a blower kit for a 4.9.

Keep your current truck and fix it up. I plan to keep my 2000 F150 until its 5 or 6 years old maybe longer before I get a new one and just fix what ever goes wrong with it if anything between now and then. After all my current truck is paid for and if i went for a new one now I would be going in dept. something I don't want to do.

A 4.9 has 145 h.p stock. It would take a LOT more than a blower to get anywhere near 400 h.p. .

If I was you, and I didn't have a lot of money to put down for a new truck, I would just keep what I've already paid for.

it's a hard decision!!
I'm prety sure it's not 145..I think it's more around 180-185 stock if my memory serves me correct(but my memory is still a lil tipsy from all the "apple juice" i had this weekend)

It is rated at 145 hp. So what? It's got 265 ft.lbs. of torque, and it's torque that matters. A blower would turn that thing into a monster, that eat alive another truck with 400 hp. Don't let the hype confuse you. Torque is what you want.

Take care,

You don't even neccesarily need a kit thats manufactured for the inline 6. As long as you have mass air you can pick up any used or rebuilt blower for it and fab up a bracket to mount it where the air pump or a/c compressor would go. From there its just a matter of plumbing it with rubber hoses and pvc pipe.

Actually i thought the carbed I6 had 145 and the EFI I6 had 185? Oh well. My engine is 11 years old and it could still pull down a house, even though my 0-60 time is probably the same as my 1/4 mile time

If I do decide to keep my truck I'm using your truck Ford4ever as my goal. Love how yours looks!

Depends. You're obviously talking about a centrifugal blower. The mounting brackets, etc are a bit more complicated than you think, but certainly not out of reach of most people. The problems tend to come from relocating of the components that you have to move and from the necessity of keeping a commercially available belt length, again not out of reach. Since centrifugals add boost at high RPMs, they're not real applicable to a 300 which never revs above 3600. A positive displacement blower would necessarily have to be a kit since very few people have the facilities to fab up a replacemant manifold and plenum.

On a 96 though the real issue is the OBD-II electronics and what needs to be done to fool the system. Any blower manufacturer who offers a kit will necessarily have addressed that issue. That's why I want to know who he's talked to that says they can do it.

Thats correct i was thinking of like a vortech or powerdyne centrifugal supercharger. Your right about the RPM issue though. I think there is one guy on a different Ford website (gasp!), that is running a turbo inline 6 in his truck that he fabbed up from junkyard parts.

Whats a blower..a turbo since it connects into the intake?
