PRKWUD.. Need Technical Spec's
PRKWUD.. Need Technical Spec's
Chris,
I am pulling the head off of another 4.9 (87-95 model) for my rebuild. I was wondering what the Valve stem to guide clearance specs are? Is there a way of testing them without all of the special tools? I know on a SBC, you can insert the valve backwards and if it moves in both directions a certain amount, the guide needs replacing, can the same test work for the Ford head? If so, what are the measurements?
I have new valves, springs, retainers etc, but was hoping I could lap grind the new valves in the head and and run with it.

Stem to guide clearance is .001" - .0027". You can do the same thing with this head as you do with the Chevy, as long as you have a feel for it. You shouldn't be able to rock it at all, really, and if you can, try knurling the guides if you have the tool. If not, take the head to a shop and spend the money to have them do it all. You really should have it surfaced anyway, since 4.9's do run hot, and with a head that long, warpage isn't unusual.
The valve seat angle is 45 degrees, and the face is 44 degrees. Lap away.

Take care,
-Chris
