How many quarts of oil do the 4.9 require?

 

6 quarts, although some of the dipsticks read full at 5. My understanding is that Ford originally sain 5 quarts but then later published a TSB recommending 6 quarts.

It's deceptive. Officially, it's 5 quarts, plus one for the filter, but the angle of the filter allows most of it to drain back into the engine, so if your dipstick reads a half quart over after the engine has been sitting for a while, you'll know why.
