Talk me into it
I have owned an '88 F-150 2x4 for two years now. It is my first truck and has been awesome. I've been shopping around for a newer one but can't convince myself that I need it. Mine has been 100% reliable and well taken care of. I would like to buy a '94-'96 F-150 4x4 extended cab auto. The 302 will do and that is what I have now, although I would like the 351. I would like to spend around $6500.
Here are my reasons not to upgrade. My truck is truly built Ford tough and I just couldn't ask for more in terms of reliability. It gets good gas mileage and runs flawlessly. The interior and body are near perfect (no rust!). The two wheel drive has gotten me where I need to go for the most part, but then again I do avoid some situations. Last but not least, I didn't give a single penny for it.
I could sell it and get an easier drive with the automatic over my 5-speed. The clutch has worked good but sometimes gets annoying in 'go slow' situations. The 4x4 could get me into trouble but might also get me out? The extended cab would sure me nice to haul all my gear on my long ATVing expeditions.
So what do you think? Talk me into it!

Just for regf, I have a '95 4x4 extended cab with a 302.
My truck does have some rust, but I knew this when I got it. It came from up north in the rust belt.
I don't do any hard core off roading but the 4x4 is nice to have. Helps me through some crappy job sites when I'm loaded down with tools and signs. Even in good traction situations the transfer case makes it easy to crawl without bouncing around over large ruts and rocky crap. Saves on the rockers and the occupants at times.
The auto will give up some performance, but in stop and go you can't beat it. Also great to have in towing situations. I've towed some loads that would be hard to get moving with a stick without really working the clutch hard.
As for the extended cab, I needed it so the little girl could fit in the truck. It's also great for keeping munchies and drinks handy on long trips. I also like having more room to lock up tools when I don't have time to unload at night.
Since I've bought the truck I had to replace a belt tensioner and just recently my oil pressure gauge started acting up. Should be a cheap fix. My rear tank went, but that was a result of the above mentioned rust and neglect by the previous owner. With just shy of 91K miles I have no concerns with anything other than routine maintenance.
