Whining from rear of truck
Whining from rear of truck
Hey, guys:
There is a moderate whining noise coming from the back of my truck--from the fuel pump ('95 w/302 and 100K). Is this noise normal or the sign of an impending pump failure?
thanks
scott

I have a 94 w/89k miles and I have the fuel pump whine too. It's not too loud but from the back of the truck you can hear it. I hope it's 'normal' because I have other things to spend the $2-300 repair cost on.
Anyone know if this noise is normal? Mine has done it since I bought it 5000 miles ago.

well PKRWUD or Macgyver or someone else might be able to tell you for sure, but my fuel pump died about 3 weeks after it started to whine. at first it would whine after 20 minutes of use, then it would whine whenever the truck was on, then the pump would fail intermittently, until it finally kicked the bucket.
Traditionally, Ford in-tank electric fuel pumps become noticably louder just prior to failure. This isn't set in stone, but more often than not, an unusually loud pump (that wasn't loud before) is in need of replacement.
Take care,

I've had my truck a year and a half now. Rear pump has always whined. I always use the rear and front. The rear tank shape seems like it will transmit sound better.
I say do a fuel pressure test and if its good, run it until it quits.
