Oil pressure guage & sender diagnostic
Oil pressure guage & sender diagnostic
OK I have no oil pressure. The truck got soooper hot and then made funny noises. Did I hurt something? It smelled like fire...
OK now time for reality. My oil pressure gauge is acting up. Pressure appears fine, plenty of oil pumping. I just hate having no gauge.
I cleaned up the connection on the sender, still intermittent. From my understanding these early model trucks use an "idiot" gauge either you have pressure or you don't. My truck always stayed dead center of the gauge, so I assume it's an all or nothing thing.
Does anybody have any reference to trouble shoot the gauge or sender. I'm assuming the sender in this case is just a switch, not capable of variable resistance. I am also assuming that simply grounding the wire from the sender will tell me if the gauge is functioning.
As for the sender, would a "real" sender make the needle actaully move like a real oil pressure gauge? I saw a link somewhere about making the gauge work rather than the on/off junction it has from the factory. Just can't find the link!!!
I know if I pick up a sender it will be the gauge, so I'm looking for a definate method to test both if possible. TIA

well mine does work like a gauge .?? when i put in my high volume oil pump my pressure started dropping . i didnt want a high pressure pump . (didnt wanna blow any seals or anything) so i got a high volume . no more pressure then a stock pump but alot more oil flow . my pressure did increase some what then. now when it is cooler outside my pressure runs higher . til it gets hot and then it drops some . this is indicating to me that it is working like a real gauge?? anyhow . being a single wire to the sending unit it work on a ground resistance . so by grounding the wire would make the gauge top out . thus the gauge would be working correctly .if it dont max the gauge then the gauge would be bad correct??.........lol
Sounds like yours is a real gauge. Guess I'll have to throw some resistance in and see if the stock gauge will work with a real sender.
Nobody has had to deal with one of these suckers?
Just a poll..... which people have the gauge that moves and which years have the idiot gauge?
