uh oh...

I've been hearing a new noise from the beast lately....sometimes when I'm at a dead stop and I start to accelerate I hear a small thump/tink come from I think the rear suspension area of the truck. The truck runs great..so I'm stumped.

Cool

Maybe a "U" joint in the driveshaft ?????? It should do it if you sitting still and put the truck in drive and then move it to reverse with your foot on the brake. You should be able to hear the thump/tink as the driveshaft changes direction.

Have Fun & Keep on Truckin'

Looks like the U joint....is it doing any harm to the truck? Is it something that I would need to replace and if so is it the whole drive shaft that gets replaced or is there like a kit or something to just replace the u joint.?

Thanks in advance..

I'm leaving in a hour to head to Las Vegas for the weekend to the the Richard Petty Driving school!!!

So after I get my 8 laps in a winston car that I paid $350 for I'll come home all pumped up to a broken truck I have to probly work on

DO NOT DRIVE THAT TRUCK UNTIL THE U-JOINT IS REPLACED!!!

Let me tell you why. If it happens to be the u-joint between the tranny and the driveshaft, and it snaps, the driveshaft will drop into the road, and launch the bed of your truck a good 8 to 10 feet in the air, while ripping the rear end out.

Been there.

Take care,
-Chris

I've seen that, scarey! Why is it that fords break there and chevys always break at the rear end end?

Because Fords have more torque close to the engine, while Chevys use the driveshaft to multiply their torque.

HAH! I was just kidding.

My nitrous injected Buick broke the forward u-joint once, and the transmission output shaft once. Both times is was the forward u-joint area that was the weak link in my drivetrain. Really f'cking sucked! I guess that's what happens when you bolt 521 hp to a 4000 lb car, with 2.70 rear gears.

Hey, I was always learning!

Take care,
-Chris

I've seen it and it ain't pretty....

Makes you think a loop might be in order even if the output doesn't dictate it. Cheap insurance....

U-joints are not hard to replace they are just time consuming...being the first time you are going to change them....what you do is disconnect the drive shaft from the rear end and slide it out of the back of the tranny....at the auto parts store say i need two U-joints for a (insert year of truck)...get the higher price greaseable ones....i like spicer so if you can afford them and they have them get em......but if not just get the reg ones...

ok..I'm looking in a repair manual and it says I need to obtain a repair kit which include a trunnion, cups, needle rollers, seal, washer and snap rings..does this sound correct. It doesn't say anything about getting new u-joints..or are these what make up the u joint put together?
