Unhappy Problems fueling up

Been having problems fueling up. Seems if I put the gas nozzle into the tank input, the gas pump triggers a shutoff as soon as I start pumpin' some gas.............. I guess because its' sensing a certain amount of back pressure. The only way to gas up is to only put the tip of the nozzle into the tank input.

I have dual tanks, and both of them do the same thing. Any ideas what is going on?

The truck is pretty new to me, so I haven't learned much about it's quirks. 1990 F150 4x4, 4.9L.

Are you sure it's not just the gas station pump/nozzle your using...Have you used any other gas stations and run into this problem........I'm not trying to be rude by asking dumb questions, just seems weird both tanks do it. Maybe PKRWUD will stumble in here and solve all your problems.

My truck is sometimes moody like that, but not very often. If I put the nozzle all the way in, and set it to max flow, it will usually shut off right away. But when I set the tip just past the leaded fuel lock-out (the small insert just inside the filler tube with the spring loaded door), and then let the pump handle "hang" outward, it pumps till it's full, usually set to max flow. Some stations pumps are more sensitive, and require that I set the flow rate at one step below max, but not very often.

Take care,
-Chris

No, it's been happening at different gas stations. If the nozzle is all the way in, I can hardly crack-open the fuel and it shuts down - I'm talking not even 1/4 open.

I have to do what PKRWUD said - the tip of the nozzle has to be WAY out for me to be able to put fuel in.

as someone asked before . and i answered this question . there are several things that can cause this problem .

1, vent hose blockage

2. not enough downward slope to the fill hose .

3. check valve in the tank is sticking .

Thanks for the tips. Is there an easy way to see if it's #1? What does the check valve's function in the tank, and is there any way to test it without removing the tank.

FWIW, I have dual tanks, and it does it on both of them.

I 've been having the same problem with my truck........but only in the rear tank.
I've been told it might have something to do with the 3" body lift.
