Question Hey PKRWUD

Just read through your sig. Notice you have a 4.9L with K&N FIPK, plus modified for cold air ram. How did you achieve this? I fabbed up a homemade FIPK with K&N filter for my 90 F150 with I-6 but never had time to work on the cold air intake issue. Have you discussed this on the board before? If so, what keyword should I use to search? Thanks.

I've got to go out to Moorpark (30 minute drive) to work on the Sprint car (we're racing tomorrow) right now, but I'll try to check back in later this evening to answer your questions, both here and in the other thread. In the meantime, go to my website (link in my sig) and click on the F-150 page. There are some pics there that will give you a general idea. I have gone over this here before, but the search feature is currently disabled on this site.

More later.

Take care,
-Chris

ram air

Thanks. Found and looked at the ram air setups on your page and McGuyvers, too. Yours is more akin to mine, since I also have a 4.9L six, only in a 1990 F150 like McGuyvers. Where did you get those ram air hoses and the filter? Surely those hoses weren't stock. My setup uses a metal Y fabbed out of exhaust pipe to route the two stock hoses into one outlet, where I have a K&N cannister-style filter attached. The filter sits where the airbox was, but has no ram air hose. Works great as the metal Y helps cool the air as it comes through the filter. But I still like your hose and filter setup. That's what I am aiming for. Your truck is mass air, right? So you probably see more response and maybe better MPG? My 90 is speed density and I haven't run the mod long enough to test MPG, but it really breathes a lot better now and has more get up and go from standing still. Let me know where you got the hoses and filter. I like your setup.

The plastic hoses that go from the filter to the TB are the stock ones that used to go to the airbox, but I had to do a little massaging to get them to work. The filter itself is the K&N FIPK. It calls for being mounted in the stock air box location, but I moved it down in front. The filter receives fresh air through an opening along side the radiator, as well as some ducting that goes from the opening in the bumper, to right below the filter. The steel braided crankcase filter hose, from the valve cover to the K&N, is the real thing, with A&N fittings.

Ray is right, my truck is speed density. The FIPK made a HUGE difference in power, top speed, acceleration, etc. The JET ECM chip I had installed for 3 years was equally as impressive. Unfortunately, mine developed a small problem at cold start up that was due to the chip, so last month I removed it. BIG difference. Feels like I'm towing an Escort again. Still much better than stock, but when my truck was at it's best, I beat stock 5.0 F-150's with no problem.

My exhaust was a plus as well, but dollar for dollar, it probably yielded the least value. The sound is great, though.

I tried installing a Crane Cams Hi-6 CD Ignition box, but the factory ignition was better. Really surprised me, too!

I need to update my sig one of these days. My latest addition was to the stereo system. I am a Mac man, and have an iPod (Mp3 player that holds 1000 songs, yet is smaller than a pack of smokes). I have already gone through my 200-300 cd's, and transfered all the music I want on it (665 songs, currently), and needed to find a way to hardwire it to my truck stereo. It took some doing, but I was successful. I can't begin to tell you how awesome it is to be able to hear any song I want to instantly in my truck. Makes long drives easy.

Take care,
-Chris
