Chip ? again
Chip ? again
Raise your hand if any of you has had or heard about performance chips. Basically I want the nitty-gritty of the different brands, who, what, where, reliabily, did what it claimed, ect. Is superchip the only brand talked about in these boards?
Thanks for your input.

talk to Mike Troyer. He is the man to buy from whether you get the Superchip or the Diablo chip. Those are basically the only two chips that I would consider but I am biased. I say the Superchip !!!

IzzyEddy,
I see you have a 302 engine and a superchip. I have one on the way, (should be on my doorstep any day now). How do you like your chip? What kind of performance gains did you notice? I'm hoping to gain a little on the low end. All the mods. I've done so far have helped out mid-range to top end power (like pulleys, exhaust, headers, K&N) so I need something that will help out off the line a tad. Where did you notice the gains the most? Thanks in advance!

TF, the overall experience that I have had is great !!!
Put the chip in which took a little longer because of the odd location but Neal and I got the job done. You could definately feel the difference. The shifts were firmer and I like the throttle response as well since I did get use to the feel of having the K&N FIPK on the truck. And since I put the exhaust on about 5 months before, the superchip finished off the top 3 best-bang for your truck modifications. It was a definate bonus after adding the K&N & exhaust to the truck. I wish the shifts were a little firmer but I have to remember that I am dealing with a 20ft., 5000 lbs truck that wasn't meant to be drag racing around.
There are other chips on the market but if I remember correctly, the only other chip that comes close to the Superchip for overall performance that is there all of the time is the Diablo chip. Sorry, I have never used it and probably won't. The other chips, Jet, hypertech, etc. work only at WOT (Wide Open Throttle) and then as soon as you let off of the gas, it is done it's job. They don't work at any other time. Hope that this has helped and not confused anyone.

Well..I've been debating between getting a Jetchip or a Superchip but with PKRWUD's comment
I think I'm sold with the Jetchip. LOL
I loved it, and would have married it if it did windows.

Might be scary depending upon what the answer is !!!
Chris, I always thought that it was just the Superchip and the Diablo chip that worked all the time. I guess I didn't read anything about the Jet chip. Most other post I have read mostly say that most other chips only work at WOT.
I stand corrected !!!

Dean,
From my understanding, Diablo and Superchips are CARB approved. There are other chips that tune at all throttle positions, but many are sold as "Off Road or racing" chips as they are not all CARB approved.
From what I've seen about Jet, they sell one that works only in open loop, and another at all revs/loads. I think they call it the "Stage II" chip.
Inski21,
Seems that even more than other mods, chips seem to be a "love it or hate it" type of thing for many. I know several people that have tried chips, but almost as many that took them out.
I would like to have one just to clean up my shifts, but I don't want to pay for a flip chip to accomplish this. Rest assured that if I have to shell out $300 or so bucks for a chip and eat and added fuel cost for premium, that I will also pay for a couple trips to the dyno and post the results.
I don't see this happening though, because the dyno results I have seen tell me that the majority of improvement in most cases is coming from shift points and shift strategy rather than pure power increases.
I'm sure there are exceptions...... Chris (PKRWUD) isn't one to blow smoke, and this may convince my to try the Jet chip.
