Warn hubs..

I just installed a set of the standard ones in place of the stock automatic hubs (90 F150). One thing, the instructions said to jack up the tire and make sure the front axels didn't move in the free setting and did move in the locked setting. Well when I go from locked to free I would have to go in reverse for a foot before the axels unlock. Is this normal??

Thanks,

Shannon

I've just installed Warns also. I haven't even used 4wd yet due to the dry conditions around here. I'll find out tomarrow on my break. We've got a 40 foot high snow bank we've been working on getting to the top of. If I had a detroit locker I'd been over the top of it already.

When you installed them did you notice the axels moving when in the free position until you go in reverse?

Manual locking hubs don't engage (or dis-engage) instantly. Warn's and MileMarker's engage (etc) faster than the Ford OEM hubs do. They have dog clutches in them and they must match up before engaging. This is why it's a good idea to engage them before you need them. Backing up a few feet will help dis-engage them. This takes any applied torque off them and allows them to dis-engage. As long as they engage and dis-engage you're good to go.
