old trucks are good, new trucks are better.
I can't decide between the early-mid 90s and the 97-03! I love the looks of the older ones, and from what I hear they're a lot easier to work on...but trying to find a 351 where I live is not easy! I like the fact of the 97-03 that they do sit a little higher, and the fact that you can get one of those programmer/tuner things for it. I've heard problems with the 5.4...how about the 4.6? Is it like the 5.0 where it doesn't get it's power until higher up in the rpm range?
I have a 91 and a 08 f150 and I'd rather drive my 91 instead. 08 has the 4.6 with 3.55 gears and the 91 has the 5.0 with 3.55 gears. My 08 is alot faster but the 91 has more torque. I like the looks of the new ones but ford screwed up in 97 when they narrowed the body in. One thing I like about the older ones is that if I need a door it don't matter a f250,f350, will work along with a bunch of the other parts.
Yeah, there are certain things that I like more about the older ones, for instance, wing windows, I really miss those. As far as engine power, I wouldn't give up my 5.4 for any older engine in the same class (ie. 351). This thing has been reliable as heck. Only complaint on the engine so far is the exhaust manifolds and studs, what a crap design.
I like the older trucks, and I love my 88 F350, but the downside is the ease of finding parts. I just found out my locale JY is going to 2000 and up, and will be crushing all pre 2000 vehicles.
So, while the older truck is better in some respects, the ease of finding parts is not one of them here!
