Angry Shift ****

Well I have a 96 f150 4.9L 5 speed and my girlfriend pissed me off the other night when I was dropping her off...but to make a long story short I was driving away trying to create a scene by doing a nice old burn out but I missed a gear and my shift **** popped off in my hand so I go down to Pep Boys to get a new one but none of them fit,the damn stick is to fat...anyone ever replace theirs...I need some idea's on some brands. Please help..

I replaced my factory one with a B&M Aluminum T handle that I had laying around the garage. I had to drill it out to fit.

Take care,
-Chris

it happened to me many moons ago when i had a stick shift with the same engine/trans. i just went to the local hardware store and bought some liquid nails. poured it into the ****, placed the **** on and wiped the excess off. waited a day and it was better than new. i just don't believe in spending money on a new one unless it can't be fixed or you want a new one.

i bought a shiny new chrome shifter ball and it ended up being too small for the fat stick we have for a shifter. i just drilled the shifter ball out to make it fit around the stick. i believe i used a 9/16" drill bit, but dont quote me on that because im really not sure. good luck!

hey PKRWUD

Just wondering, you say you put that B&M **** on...how did you mount it..did you put threads on the stick? or some kind of liquid cement?

Stuff sold at NAPA that acts just like instant JB Weld. At first I tried to fit it, and it worked for a week or two, but since it is a T handle, it got bumped around some, and got loose. So, I mixed up some "stuff", put it inside the T handle, and drove it onto the shifter with a rubber mallet. It hasn't even thought about coming off for 2 years now.

I kinda regret it though. I am a major Bill Elliott fan (used to work for him), and I recently got a BE shift **** that I would like to use, but I'm afraid I'll damage something trying to get the T off. Oh well.

Take care,
-Chris

New ****

I had this same problem a couple years go, i was going for a carbon fiber look, and couldn't find one with a big enough hole for the stick. What i ended up doing was rethreading the new ball to the size of my stick.

ok,if I drill a hole big enough in a **** how would I get it to stay on the stick? the stick has slots/groves that go straight up and down,I'm afraid to thread it cuz if I screw up I don't want to have to find a stick.

Find a piece of PVC pipe, or even a thick rubber hose, with an ID as close to the OD of the stick as possible. A slightly smaller ID would be best, but it has to be close. Cut a piece 1/2" long. We will now refer to that piece as the insert. Drill out the **** to match the OD of the insert you just made. Place the insert into the ****, and place the **** onto the stick. Use a rubber mallet, if necessary, to drive it onto the stick. This way, the insert will take the abuse, not the stick.

That was pretty good. I wish you had asked this question before I "JB" welded my T handle on.

Take care,
-Chris

When my shifter **** popped off I wrapped the spline with a couple of turns of black tape and tapped it back on-that must have been 2 yrs ago.
