son need help to get car insurance

Hello all,
I post also in the Canada Thread, so sorry for the double posting.
But my 19 years old son is in this Moment in Detroit and search a reasonable car insurence for his 1995 F150
5.8ltr, Aut.,Crew Cab with SB.
Here the complete story:
After finishing school last month and before begin study in the next year, he want to travel through Canada and make "work and travel"
Last week he bought the F150 in Detroit and now he try to find an insurance for this car.
The Dealer told him to make the insurance about him for 10 Days(250$). Then he could drive to Canada and make the insurance in Canada
for the rest time of 6or 8 month.

The options I see are:
-taking the 10Days insurance wich the dealer has offered and looking for an insurance in Canada
-searching an insurance in Detroit for the complete time and drive with this US insurance through Canada

If anyone have a Tip what would the best way to get the insurance, it would be grateful.
Thanks for help and sorry for my horrible English.

Greets from Kerpen, West Germany

Wolfgang

He has to get insurance where the vehicle is titled and registered. He should also have a matching address and driver's license.

Where is the truck titled and registered? Where is his residence, where is his driver's license from?

It´s titled and registered in Michigan/Detroit,in the next time his residence are Hostels or Motels.
His driver license is from Germany with an international driver´s license but I read that he need the translated driver´s license.

Not exactly. In most states in the US, you can live and drive in that state with your insurance and license from a different state, as long as: 1) You're in the US military, or 2) you're a full time student. However you can't not work in that state (other than above), or own a home in that state or have children in school in that state. If you do, then you have to register your car there and get insurance and license there. Some states enforce this rigidly and other states like Florida pretty much ignore it.

All of that said: since you're son is not a resident of a US state US (AFIK) and we're talking about Canada and not another US state, I don't know where that leaves him.

Yeah, this is a grey area.

For one, you want to make sure the truck is insured. Secondly, I would double check to make sure he can legally drive in US/Canada for sure.

Thank you for this Information.
now he ´s in Montreal waiting to get the papers of the car.
Then he try to get an insurance there.
If he find a work and get an address it won´t be a problem to insure the car.
