4x4 question

Hey guys, first post here. I'm driving a 95 f-150 and its a beautiful truck with a lot of little and not-so-little issues on the inside. I've fixed a lot of the issues, but the guy that sold it to my dad which is told him the 4x4 didn't work. He failed to tell him that it was riddled with all of the other issues that it had, so I'm wondering the validity of the failure statement. My hope is that he told my dad that the 4x4 didn't work so that he wouldn't look under the vehicle and see all the other issues. Neither my dad or I have tried the 4x4 and I'm curious if testing it might damage something just by trying it out. Any ideas? Or should I just try it? Its automatic everything and that button is just screaming at me to push it. Thanks in advance.

Well, you really should look underneath to see if it has a transfer case, front driveshaft, and front axle..........

Haha. I know the axle is there. I guess I'll look for the rest.
