Question Clutch Master Cylinder

I'm going to replace my clutch master cylinder this weekend hoping it will help my shifting problems. Anyone have any tips/tricks I should know about?

Clutches Clutches Clutches

Just had my clutch and master cylinder replaced about a month ago. Although, the master cylinder I had purchased brand new was bad and had to get another one, everything went smoothly. What kind of shifting problems have you been having? I didn't notice any difference other than it was harder to get into first (which, I found out why, and a lot of other useful information about the Mazda transmission recently), and that the clutch pedal had less resistance.

Dont get discouraged when you go to bleed it. Sometime it takes a while to get all of the air out of system

The problem I've had is having to jam the clutch through the firewall to get in and out of gear.
I couldn't wait for the weekend because it looked like such an easy thing to do and it was. The hardest part was putting the spring loaded switch back on the plunger which took all of 5 minutes. I only bled it for 20 minutes which isn't enough but it's already 100% better. I'll bleed it again this afternoon to finish the job.
I've gotta say, everything I've done on this truck (shifter forks, starter, clutch cylinder) has been easier than any other vehicle I've ever owned. I love my truck!

More Clutch Problems

The clutch in my 89 4 speed would not hold pressure. I had to put my foot through the floor to get it to shift, and occasionally had to shut the truck off in order to get it into gear.

A buddy replaced the master cylinder and it seemed to work fine for about a week. Yesterday, the clutch was gone again. Two inches of pedal, very difficult to shift.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Mine started going bad again already and I found the true problem:
Replacing the master cyclinder seemed to do the trick but it's not the master cylinder that was the problem. It's the bushing-clip that holds the plunger to the pedal. When it goes it feels like you lose a couple inches of pedal. The thing that's causing this bushing-clip to fall apart is the bushings that hold the pedal itself in place. The outer one split causing enough slop to tear up the pushrod bushing-clip twice in one week.
Solution: $18 for the brake/clutch bushing kit from Ford (mine will be in this afternoon) and $3 for the pushrod bushing-clip. To look at it I would say it should take about 20 miinutes.

Hard to believe that something this simple caused this much misery as well as a broken shifter fork.

G8RBob,-Sounds like you still have air in the system. Check out my thread under the Transmissions section titled "Bleeding the Clutch".

Hope this helps you guys.
