Straight six tips

Was wondering if I could get some good pointers to maintain and tune up a straight six. Its actually my neighbors son's truck but I think I'm more enthused about it than he is. I recommended the generic items like spark plugs, plug wires, air filters, ect. I'm not sure if its a 240 or 300 c.i. motor but I know its a 94-95ish truck and it's fuel injected. Thanks!

It would be 300 cubic inch, or commonly referred to as 4.9 liter. In addition to what you mentioned, distributor cap and rotor. Maybe throw some fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank, just use the directions on the container.

You might check the engine ventilation system, PCV valve and hoses.

Yeah, definitely a new PCV, add chevron techron or gumout with regane to the gas for fuel injector cleaning. Maybe change the accessory(fan) belt and change out the coolant.

Yep, he definitely needs a new belt. Sounds like a lot of common tune up items will help him out. His biggest gripe is the mileage which he should be getting better than what he is now.

Keep oil and water in it and you are gonna run forever.

Poke around over on this board too, but welcome here as well.

Wasn't it the 300 I6 that they almost couldn't kill during cash for clunkers? Drain the oil, fill it up with the silica crap, and they would run for 20 minutes before finally seizing up?

You got too much V with that unit, and not enough six in a row to make it go.

Ha, yeah I noticed it was inline-dominated after I had already asked.
