94 F150 Engine/Tranny swap options
I have a 94 f150 with over 300k on the engine and tranny. everything else is in great shape so I'm looking to swap a new engine and transmission in. I don't know where to begin because I don't have any previous experience with Fords.
it's a work truck, not going to be racing or doing any modifications beyond getting it back into good reliable order.
What are some of the options for a basic swap?
It's 2wd, is it fairly easy to go to 4wd, or does it require extensive work?
Thanks for your patience towards a newbie. I'll be happy to get more info from the truck if needed.

Thank you for the reply's.
No on the 4wd, good to know! it was a high hope anyway
It has the 4.9L engine and auto tranny.
The engine burns oil like crazy and is way underpowered. One of the cylinders has damage and the spark plug gets fowled in a matter of days if I clean/replace it, although it could just be the cylinder seals. It wont pass emissions test without a few hundred $$ in work and with that much wear on the engine I'm not interested in repairing.
the tranny is in okay shape, but feels like it has at least 300k on it.
I would like to be able to tow 2000-2500lbs if needed, but my main goal is to be able to have the engine and tranny run reliably. I would assume the stock hp is enough (certainly not getting original power now), although I'm interested in going bigger if it's economically feasible. I've saved about $3500 for working on the truck and the engine and tranny (plus engine components) are the only things not up to par.

If it has a 4.9, that would have a E4OD tranny. It's solid, I'd leave it alone till it goes. Then rebuild it or get another one.
I'd just throw another 4.9 in or rebuild the one you have. That's going to be a better towing motor than anything else you can put in and the swap would be relatively simple compared to a V-8 swap.
