Aux Tranny Cooler

I have what looks like an auxiliary transmission cooler on the front passenger side of my radiator. It's on the front of the radiator, not the side. Did this come from Ford? If I have this should this suffice in keeping my transmission cool?

Here is what I have:

Looks like an aftermarket unit placed in the factory location. I have the factory unit on my '95 and the only ones I've ever seen from the factory are the stacked plate type design.

In either case it will help keep the tranny cooler, as well as take some of the load off the radiator as well.

We have very similar trucks... I'm assuming you have the 351 engine though?

I have a 302. It's hard lined plumbed which has me leaning toward a Ford tranny cooler. All the mounting hardware looks OEM too. I have a B&M cooler but I don't think having two coolers is necessary. I'm also putting in a tranny external filter and temp gauge. Still need to figure out a location for those.

I've seen a couple of trucks with a factory trans cooler if it has a 7 blade fan then its probably HD cooling and those came with trans coolers

No fan. It's just mounted on the front of the radiator. It's really thick compared to the B&M stacked plate that I have.

I think he was talking about your radiator fan. That main fan changes with the cooling package from the factory from my understanding. I think some of that is grey area though... too bad Ford didn't use option codes for more items.

Just how thick is the cooler on your truck? Just curious as most of that style I've seen are thinning than the stacked plate type. I'd have to take a look but I think my factory tranny cooler is thicker than the (single core) radiator.

Oh, ok. I've seen tranny coolers with electric fans so I wasn't sure. It's pouring down rain right now so I can't measure the thickness but if I had to guess off memory I'd say about three inches thick. Lines coming into it are from the bottom and the hardware mounting it is what really makes me think its factory since its not a universal setup like the B&M setup.
