Mass Air in the 460?

What year did the 460 engines receive Mass Air? The next truck I buy will have a 460 engine and I want to be sure I get one with M/A? According to the K&N application guide, the first year was 1996. I just want to make sure this is accurate. Thanks in advance!

I've heard 96 also... only source I've had is from Vortech when I was looking at superchargers for my old F250 though...

Double Check!

The 302s had mass air as early as '93. Some '95 and I've been told even '96 models didn't have it yet. My '95 has mass air, but I've seen others that don't.

Double check the setup on any truck you buy. It seems for some reason there was no certain date that mass air showed up on the 302s. I would imagine that this might apply to the 460s as well.

Personally I've never seen a 460 with mass air. The intake gives it away fairly easy...

I think you may be right. I'm not so sure that mass air came in the 460's either. Who knows? But I'm not so tempted to buy a '96 or '97 F-350 anymore for 1 reason - the transmissions. I've heard the E4OD just sucks from MANY sources! And I really don't want a manual transmission, it's not a hot rod I don't really need it. I would love to stick a C6 in there, the only problem is, it isn't compatible with the fuel injected trucks. So I was gonna get a 1987 F-350, I can have my 460 with a C6, but I still need to get it smogged and I'm not down with having a tamed, carburated truck. I'm happy with my AOD so far, and I'm going to add a shift kit soon to beef it up a little. I just wish there was some way I could stick a 351 in my truck and have no one find out about it. That would be perfect!

So my question is this---

Is there any state out there that'll let me swap a fuel injected 351 for my 302???? If there is, then I'll move there!

TF,

I don't think the E4OD is that bad. The only real problems I've seen are in the bombed diesels, and they munch on just about anything.

As for your emissions concerns with upgrading your engine, that problem has STROKER written all over it. Turn the 302 into a 347. With proper tuning you should still pass your emissions test.

I've been wondering about that. I know the 302 and the 351 both have a 4" bore, the only difference is that the 351 has a 3.50" stroke compared to the 302 which has a 3.00" stroke. Perhaps if I couldn't turn my 302 into a 351, I could come pretty darn close. I'll have to make further inquiries about this...

TF,

There are LOADS of stroker kits for the 302. Ford even sells a 347 kit, but for some reason they don't sell the short blocks.

Pick up a Muscle Mustang and Fast Ford magazine, more adds than you can imagine. 331 and 347 cubes seem to be the ones done most often. Since the 5.0 went in the 'Stangs the possibilities are endless.

The other route is to stay with a stock short block but use better heads and a hotter cam, etc. Check out the dyno results on the 302s over at www.airflowresearch.com
