1988 f150

I am looking to buy a 1988 Ford F150.Went and looked at it yesterday. It has some rust, but not bad.The truck needs a header gasket. When we drove it the steering was sloppy. What is the cause of it ? It looks to have a steering stabilizer, but I dont know could it be the steering nuckel. The guy said its the steering bushing. What will it cost me and could I fix it without going to a shop. Its a nice truck that has a 351 in it,but we dont wanna pay $2,100 for it and then put that much into parts. Thanks for your help !

These trucks are starting to hit the age of needing an entire steering system R&R. Ball joints, tie rods, adjusting sleeve, drag link, pittman arm, or even the steering box itself. No way around spending about a grand in parts, doing it yourself, then having it aligned.
