93 F150 troubleshooting

Well i recently acquired a 93 F150 5.8 and i love it. However when i am driving down the highway and i give it a little gas to maintain speed it will sometimes make a loud humming sound that can be heard throughout the whole cab and felt through the gas pedal, get down on the throttle or let off and it stops. My brother suggested it might be my torque converter. What are ya'lls thoughts?

sounds like T/C to me, have you changed fuel filter? Last time tranny was serviced if any... Rear differential service?

I haven't yet since i got it. I plan to change my tranny filter, service the rear diff and flush the system here this weekend, it was last serviced in 02 (or so says the sticker on the door) But now that you mention it it would be good to change the fuel filter as well seeing as i don't know when it was last changed. If a fuel filter is dirty will it starve at lower rpms only? because the vibration only occurs when i am giving it the lightest throttle.

Well i dropped the tranny pan and drained the rear differential. The vibration is significantly lessened. I think that the 4th gear belt has been worn from being "babyed to much" and it is slipping while in gear. hopefully some lucas stop slip will fix everything right up!

The torque converter has a plug, you should have drained it too. You only got about 1/3 of the fluid out with a pan drop.

I just learned of it after i had done all my other work. Is it allright if i just drain the torque convertor alone? Or do i need to drop the tranny pan and drain it all again?

To do the job RIGHT, I'd drop the pan again. All it will cost you is some time/mess and 5 extra quarts of fluid - and if you didn't change the filter when you dropped the pan, this would be a good thing to do anyway. Assuming you have a E4OD, a filter kit is about 20 bucks.

What did you use for fluid? Mercon was what the factory specified, but it's not made any more. Ford now recommends using Mercon V.

I did change the filter. And I used the Napa brand ATF tranny fluid. It is essentially mercon. Allrighty so I was wondering how do I get the torque converter plug to line up with the hole so I can drain it? When I pulled out the rubber plug it was just a smooth surface inside. How do I rotate it?

Also if I drop the pan again and drain te torque converter won't I need quite a bit more that 5 quarts? 5 quarts is the pan alone I believe.

Get a helper to turn the engine over with a socket and breaker bar on the crank pulley bolt.

I meant 5 quarts extra over and above what you would need for just the torque converter. You will need about 15 quarts total.

Does that NAPA fluid meet Mercon V specs? If not, I wouldn't use it.
