Well the voltage is present on the coil, but I can't produce a spark from the coil with a spark tester.

You are positive distributor is spinning? Who timed it when different distributor was put in? Key switch operates correctly? If everything physical is okay then u have a wire issue with key to distributor(or where else circuit goes) to tell distributor to spark(once again if coil is also truely ending it there)

maybe u could borrow an ignition control module from your buddy too and try that?
