Unhappy timing on a 96 4.9

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this but I had to replace the distributor in a 96 ford f-150 with a 4.9. I can get the truck to crank but it WILL not drive down without the valves rattling and nose diving like it's dying. I have tried everything to get it right, can anyone give me some help!!!

How did you clock the new distributor?
Did you mark the rotor position of the old one and install the new one to match?
or
Did you bring the engine up to TDC for #1 on the compression stroke and install the distributor so that the rotor pointed to the post marked #1 on the cap.

Either method will work, poke and hope will not. Please note that the position of #1 is critical on a 96 because it has sequential fuel injection, not batch fire like the earlier years

Are you sure the firing order is correct? 1-5-3-6-2-4

Did you set the timing with the SPOUT connector pulled
