Leave the motor alone. It's the most reliable engine ever put in a F-150.

So don't put a v8 or rebuild the engine?

The 4.9 typically lasts for 250K miles or more and is a far better truck engine than the 5.0 V8.

You obviously have no mechanical knowledge whatsoever. Let me offer you some basic advice: if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Transmission is going downhill quickly, so that needs to be fixed. Engine is as well. They both need to be fixed now or later. Now being cheaper, later being more.expensive.when I have to buy a whole new transmission and engine.

All this coming from my grandpa with years and years of mechanical knowledge.

I can accept that it may have a sick transmission, but what makes you think the engine is sick?

what about this nozzzzzzzz on a freshly built 460 in a half ton? i think the kid needs a break, for the trucks age and the stuff he has posted for replacement, repair, it probably hasn't seen regular maintenance. also did you see the transformer sticker?! Man it had to be bumblebees old busted down cousin! that spray paint may give it the cover it needs!

When you get to high speed the whole engine starts shaking and the truck shakes with it. It needs a couple new parts because it has the same problem my grandpa's truck had, and his engine block ended up cracking. The cam gears or whatever are messed up as well.

The truck wasn't taken care of at all, the truck bed had a liner that wasn't even properly attached. It ripped out and got airborne on the highway.

The transmission doesn't shift eight. The shifter for the love of God was missing bolts so it was loose enough to make it near impossible to shift. The transmission Fluid when I changed it was funky. Kinda loomed burnt... the oil was thousands of miles overdue a change.

The glove box wouldn't shut, fixed that.
The ash tray wouldn't slide in and out, it just dangled. Fixed that.
The passenger side door locking mechanism wouldn't work. Like wouldn't click shut so I took the door off and fixed that and the door panel and fixed the window crank cause the window wouldn't shut and was held up permanently by duck tape. Same problem with the window on driver side. Fixed both sides.

The truck only has 150,000 miles on it and is in terrible shape.

The transformer on the hood wasn't a sticker. It wad spray painted on too... thats why I had to.spray paint over it cause there was no peeling it off.

I bought this truck with the intention to fix it up with my grandpa, so sorry if I sound like an inwbriatws idiot... I thought I would find a nice forum to help me learn. Don't have to be jackasses about a kid trying to learn. Y'all had to start somewhere.

The shaking is most likely a misfire which could simply be an ignition issue. Do a wet/dry compression test before you do anything to the engine.
How do you know the cam gears are messed up? Unless you've pulled the timing cover and inspected them, you cannot possibly tell.
What transmission do you have?

Grandpa took something off and said the cam gears were screwy.

Whoa there guy, if'n ya can't take some ribbin' from a friendly forum, better stay off some of the other sites.

Can't think of one thing though that is easily removed to check the timing gears. Which if off, wouldn't run very well or at all.

This being a '96, any autozone can check your OBD2 for codes.
