Performance mods for 300c.i.d. I-6???
Does anyone know of any bolt on or otherwise performance mods for an '96 F-150 300c.i.d. I-6 with a 5 speed and abs. 2 wheel drive reg cab. any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
Hi Talioth 72,
Yes, there are plenty of things you can do to that "Big 6" as those 4.9's are affectionately called.
The Top 3 best bang-for-the buck mods are:
1.) Optimize your powertrain programming with the Superchip. This will get you a solid 10%-12% power gain.
2.) Reduce the restriction in the air intake tract, using a good airbox elimination kit. This will get you another 10 horsepower, roughly.
3.) Reduce restriction on the exhaust side, using a good cat-back exhaust system. This is worth another 10 horsepower or so on the Big 6.
From there you can go on to things like a set of underdrive pulleys, converting over to electric coling fans, headers, and on and on, you can make that truck go just as fast as you want to spend, is one way to put it.
If you'd like to go over this in detail, please feel free to give us a call, we'll be happy to go over this with you.
Good luck with your truck,

Good luck with your truck,
I've got a '95 4.9/5spd. super cab, and I have tried several things. The single biggest improvement was from the K&N FIPK. HUGE improvement. Second would be the Edelbrock cat back, but it was more of a pain to install than I thought it would be. Thank God for compressed air. Third would be the ECM chip. Fourth was probably Champion Truck spark plugs. Fifth was emptying some of my tools out of my boxes! My truck currently weighs 6000 pounds with one full tank and one half full tank of gas, my tools and myself (it used to weigh 6600, before removing some tools and my air compressor). With those mods, I can keep up with a stock 302 or 4.6. If I got rid of all my tools, I could beat them. Don't waste your time looking at headers. Your factory exhaust manifold is a very nice dual tri-y, and works fine. Your ignition is tops, too. I have added a Crane PS91 coil because I wanted to, but noticed no difference (I didn't expect to). I also installed a Crane HI-6 capacitive discharge ignition box that I had from a former race car of mine, and was very disappointed. I removed it and went back to stock. The factory ignition is tops. I also tried just about every spark plug out there, including Splitfires, and found Champion Truck plugs gave the most bang for the buck. I've tried alot of different things. I've always been V8 man, but I couldn't pass up the deal on this truck, so I bought it, and have been driving it like it had a V8 ever since. The 4.9 engine has gained every ounce of my respect, and I think it is quite possibly the best engine Ford ever made. Why they stopped is beyond me.
Take care
