Only starts using starter fluid

Hey guys, This is my first post and my first F150;

Picked up a project and I'm sure I will be spending lots of quality time on this site. My immediate concern is to fix the starting issue. I have to spray starter fluid in the throttle body in order to get the truck to start. It runs pretty good after that although it seems to rev up randomly to around 2k rmp for several minutes... then back down (TPS?). I'm planning on replacing most/all of the ignition electronics but was curious as to where I should start so I can start it without the spray?

After reading similar posts I'm leaning towards the following items; Throttle Position Sensor, Ignition Control Module/Unit, Ignition Coil.

Thanks.

JC

I'd start by replacing the MAP sensor.

I'm not trying to sound like a broken record but yes, the map sensor could be your issue with the starting.

The MAP is the one part I swap out to test, so it won't hurt to snag a few from your local junkyards. But I'd put a fuel pressure gauge on it.

Thanks for the help and ideas. It wasn't the MAP sensor. Going to go ahead and replace a few other items like the TPS and Ignition Coil for good measure but then I'm going to move to the Fuel delivery... How do you check the fuel pressure at the rail?

Don't replace anything until you've ID'ed the problem, and fixed it. Once that's done, you can change everything else "for good measure". But if you do it now, you could create new problems that will mask the original one. Did you click that thumbnail image in my post above & read the caption?
